If The World Could Vote - who would be the next president of the United States of America?
On November 4th 2008 the American people will choose a new president, a person who will become the most powerful person in the world, a person that will influence the whole world. Americans are debating, but it seems that almost every single person in the world has an opinion on who should become the next president of the United States.
To find out who would be the next president of the United States of America - if the world could vote, three guys in Iceland created a website, www.IfTheWorldCouldVote.com. On the site people get one vote for the next president of the United States. The results are then displayed where you can see how many from each country have voted, and who each country has voted for.
The founders of the site have high ambitions for it, but according to the site, they plan to get more people to vote on the site than voted in the last election in the US: “In the US presidential election in 2004 122,267,553 people voted. 6,500,000,000 people did not. Our mission is to get more people to vote than voted in the last election. Mission impossible, we know, but still, wouldn’t it be great to see what the whole world thinks?”
“The idea came to me one day, lying in bed. I started thinking about how massively important the U.S President is to the whole world. I wanted to know what the results would be if the whole world had the change to vote. Which countries would vote for Republicans and which would vote for Democrats? I immediately picked up my laptop and registered the domain, not wanting to waste another minute before seeing the first results. Of course I know that the world cannot vote. And personally don’t believe the world should have a say. But it would still be fun to see the results.” Bragi Thor, founder of IfTheWorldCouldVote.com
“Our mission is to get as many voters from as many countries as possible. Whether or not we reach our goal of more voters than in the last US election, we really want to get a reasonable amount of voters from each country so that a comparison can be made. It should give a clue about who the world would like to see as the next president of the United States.” Hjortur Smarason, co-founder of IfTheWorldCouldVote.com.
IfTheWorldCouldVote.com is a non-profit, non-political enterprise, solely driven by the curiosity of the founders - Bragi Thor, Hjortur Smarason and Steinar Hugi.
