INTRODUCTION

This is a position description for the Abatement Crew Worker within Vacant Building Enforce ment (VBE), Inspection and Compliance Administration (ICA) within the Department of Buildings (DOB). The Vacant Building Enforcement (VBE) has responsibility for enforcing all District of Columbia laws relating to vacant buildings and vacant lots within the District of Columbia. In addition, VBE has responsibility for addressing violations of the vacant property maintenance and the residential property maintenance codes that have been identified and have not been corrected by the property owner.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent for this position works as a member of a crew or team. The members will perform the following tasks as part of the daily activities. Perform general landscaping activities at assigned locations throughout the District of Columbia. Sweep, pick up, and bag trash and debris that has accumulated at assigned locations throughout the District of Columbia. Lift landscaping and construction equipment and/or supplies into trucks, trailers, industrial receptacles and storage units. Barricades open and accessible properties utilizing basic carpentry tools and wood. Provides customer service to the residents of the district. Maintains a safe job site at all times. Maintains proper use of tools, equipment and machinery. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Incumbent works as part of a crew/team under the general direction of a supervisor or Crew Leader. The incumbent will be trained to determine the sequence of operations, methods and procedures under the direction of a Crew Leader. The incumbent will keep his Crew Leader/Supervisor informed of problems encountered and incomplete assignments.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT

Incumbent will primarily work outside and shall work in all weather conditions. The incumbent shall be subjected to traffic hazards when working in certain areas, while walking or standing in streets. The incumbent shall be subjected to dust, noise, exhaust fumes and the hazards of work ing with refuse. This may include, but will not be limited exposure to: rodents and animals normally associated with an urban environment (dogs and cats). The incumbent will be exposed to areas of the District of Columbia which may have criminal activity.
