Are you an Outlier?

We're looking for a passionate, people-oriented Academic Advisor to serve as a primary point of contact, support and motivation for students moving through a long-term learning program at Outlier. Academic Advisors will be responsible for evaluating individual goals and needs, forging trusted relationships, promoting a positive and fulfilling learning experience, and monitoring student progress through the program – helping to troubleshoot issues and/or roadblocks to success along the way.

Our ideal candidate is deeply invested in the personal and academic growth of each student, possesses an in-depth knowledge of motivation techniques and success strategies, and has prior experience in academic advising and success coaching in a higher education setting. Given the recency of long-term learning programs at Outlier and the online nature of our courses, it is important that a candidate for this role is growth-oriented, flexible to change and comfortable operating in a fully remote environment.

This role reports to the Director of Student Success Operations and is a remote, full-time position.

What You'll Do

  • Provide timely assistance, information and academic advising to an assigned cohort of students (individually and in groups) regarding the development of program options and goals, available resources and future pathways in a way that relates to the student's developmental stage
  • Quickly establish rapport with each student as part of the onboarding experience, helping to (1) plan and enroll in their upcoming course load and (2) ensure they feel accepted, engaged, empowered and set on a path of self-discovery
  • Proactively engage students in conversations, goal-setting, plans and time management strategies that will aid in their success
  • Consistently and effectively follow up with students to provide accountability and support for the plans they map in coaching sessions
  • Help troubleshoot student issues and/or roadblocks to success that arise during program
  • Assist and support internal Outlier stakeholders in the organization, delivery, assessment, and continual improvement of academic advising services
  • Utilize appropriate systems and technologies as directed for program tracking, record keeping and internal/external communication
  • Responsibly monitor progress alerts, grade reports, student enrollment progress and other behavioral data to prioritize student meetings and interventions
  • Work closely with the Outlier Student Support and Academic Success teams to triage and route specific support needs to the appropriate internal teams, ensuring line of sight into inquiry and resolution
  • Partner with Program Manager of Academic Partnerships and other internal Outlier stakeholders to help evolve the core student experience – sharing key insights, learnings and opportunities gleaned from interactions and data

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree, with specialization in higher education, counseling, psychology or related field preferred
  • 3+ years experience in higher education setting, such as advising, career services, financial aid, student success, counseling or student affairs office
    • Experience in an online learning setting a major plus
    • Experience with academic and/or social support for diverse populations (including first-generation, low-income, working and/or underrepresented students) desirable
  • 1+ years experience providing academic advising support to students with proven track record/history of positive outcomes for those advised
  • Genuine interest in the holistic development and success of students
  • Highly effective communicator and empathetic listener who values interpersonal relationships
  • Exceptional ability to determine individual goals and develop goal-oriented steps and action plans
  • Ability to monitor student progress, sustain motivation and focus, and mitigate factors hindering success
  • Strong working knowledge of retention, motivation, student transition and learning strategies (with the ability and desire to stay up to date on latest research)
  • Tech savvy - familiar with CRM/LMS tools and G Suite and comfortable working remotely with communication tools such as Slack and Zoom/Google Meet
  • Able to combine quantitative and qualitative data to form actionable student insights
  • Kind, curious, collaborative and creative
