Responsibilities*
The Section of Plastic Surgery is seeking a nurse practitioner (NP) or a Certified Physician’s Assistant (PA-C) to join a busy, collegial clinical group in the Department of Surgery.
Act as an assistant to the plastic surgeons in providing patient care. Primary responsibility will be to assist with the care of patients on the inpatient unit including patient assessment and management on a daily basis, expediting discharge planning, ensuring adherence to care protocols (including VTE prophylaxis), and answering calls related to inpatients and inpatient consults. Participate in quality assurance activities including quality improvement projects and membership in the Plastic Surgery Quality Committee.. Collect and interpret reports of diagnostic and laboratory results, including radiographic and clinical studies. Coordinate care with consultant services both inside an outside of the University of Michigan. Advise patients of test results and explain further treatment options. Provide patient education as instructed. Demonstrate effective judgment and ability to understand, act competently and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient. Perform History and Physical examinations on clinic and/or transfer patients. Support research initiatives involving our Plastic Surgery patients. Assist with education for new NPs/PAs/RN who will be providing care for our Plastic Surgery patients.

Required Qualifications*
NP
Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP-BC), Adult-Gero Acute Care NP Adult-Gero Primary care, or Adult Acute Care NP
Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
Current DEA registration required
ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center)
PA
Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
State of Michigan Controlled Substance License required
Current DEA registration required
ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center).

Desired Qualifications*
Two (2) or more years full time experience, within the past four (4) years, direct patient care experience as an APP, with adult patients in an inpatient or outpatient setting.
One (1) year full time experience, within the past four (4) years, providing care as an APP to surgical patients.
Experience working in the ambulatory care setting.
Demonstrated ability to perform the candidate’s role independently and with minimal supervision, as evidenced by interviews, recent performance appraisals and reference feedback.
Demonstrated ability to problem solve, prioritize, and delegate effective and efficiently in the delivery of patient care.
Comfort in dealing with complex clinical and social issues related to cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team, including other specialists, surgical residents, and nurses.
Procedural skills are preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Interest in developing long-term relationships with patients.
Work Schedule
Hours: 40 hours per week
Shift/Hours/Days: Days: Day shift Monday through Friday, hours, and days variable to meet clinic needs.
Location: Main University Hospital, Taubman Center

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
