Afterschool Program Site Coordinator

Centro Hispano is a non-profit that promotes empowerment and civic participation in the Latino and multicultural community to become active citizens of East Tennessee through education and social services. Centro Hispano’s Youth and Family Engagement Department includes after school programs, parent education, youth development and college access programs, and educational advocacy.

Position Description:

Site Coordinators for Centro Hispano Afterschool programs are responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of educationally enriching activities for children in their care. These activities must be developmentally and culturally appropriate, engaging, and particularly focused on the specific needs of English Language Learners. Site coordinators supervise after school tutors at their site, meet regularly with the Y&F Program Director, and engage and support parents in their afterschool programs. This position will also be responsible for the development and delivery of safe and engaging childcare for younger children (ages 1-5) whose parents are attending other Centro programs. Candidates must have a strong passion for working with children and diverse populations.

Job Expectations:

To help prepare lesson plans for educationally enriching activities that are developmentally and culturally appropriate for the children in the classroom.

To supervise and manage afterschool tutors at two Centro Hispano sites (currently located at Norwood, Lonsdale, Belle Morris, Westview, and Lenoir City), ensuring proper procedures are followed.

To encourage children, particularly English Language Learners, to work on literacy skills, to read for pleasure, and to increase their English and native-language vocabulary.

To ensure a warm and welcoming environment that helps children see learning as fun and enjoyable.

To provide adequate supervision and make sound decisions to keep children safe and healthy. The Site Coordinator must document any incidents and inform the Program Director and Program Coordinator.

To reach out and engage with parents encouraging their involvement in their children’s education.

To work with the Program Director and Program Coordinator to develop methods to improve curriculum, program policies, and assess children’s academic improvement across time.

To ensure that all children are properly registered in the program, and all documentation is submitted to the Program Coordinator.

To track attendance and input information into a data management system.

To supervise and train volunteers, track their attendance and provide this information to the Volunteer Coordinator.

Must be able to maintain an organized and sanitary work environment- including but not limited to returning snacks to proper places in the kitchen, vacuuming as needed, and cleaning surfaces and toys.

To represent Centro Hispano during partner coalition meetings or other community events, work with other Centro Hispano staff as a team when circumstances arise, and complete other activities as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • High school diploma, some college preferred
  • Bilingual and Bicultural
  • Dependable and consistent
  • Adaptable to the diverse needs of Centro Hispano and the fast pace of children’s programming
  • Experience working with youth and families from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Knowledge and skills of google suite (gmail, sheets, docs)
  • Experience managing people or supervising a team (preferred)
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Authorized to work in the United States

Salary, Schedule and Benefits

  • $15-$17/hr based on education and experience
  • Schedule
  • 30-40 hours per week
  • Centro’s afterschool programs run four days a week (Mon-Thurs) from 2:30-5:30pm.
  • Childcare hours are varied and require some evening availability
  • Occasional (approx. twice a semester) Saturday events to engage with families
