General Purpose and Scope of Position:
The Tree Fruit Agronomist will support crop advisors within their assigned territory. The Tree Fruit Agronomist will assist in developing sound nutritional strategies for customers within the geography, specifically proper product selection and use based on agronomic needs. The Tree Fruit Agronomist will also provide agronomic training and educational opportunities to the geography field staff.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Develop/optimize existing value-added nutritional offerings.
- Learn and align with the current TNS system. Understand in depth the “Why” of the soil reports that are used and how to read and interpret; Learn how to read and understand fruit analysis; learn how to understand the SI report and how it’s being used; Learn how to understand the irrigation water quality report and the various tools to remediate water quality issues; learn how to understand and interpret compost analysis reports plus understand the variables and use of the different composts; understand the use, place, and limitations of tissue analysis in tree fruits.
- Be able to articulate the priorities in measuring soil quality in our area. Develop and own a “soil philosophy”. Communicate with geography managers and crop advisors the nutritional initiatives, objectives, strategies, and action plans.
- Work as a team member in the analysis and optimization of the Wilbur Ellis nutritional database.
- Understand the role of TNS in relationship to water management and horticultural practices…crop load management, pruning, varietal differences, young tree programs.
- Be part of the team to reprogram TNS over to automation.
- Learn to understand and articulate the Apex Experience and apply it to customer needs. Work as a team member to help identify new key customers, understand their business, determine their needs and develop plans and actions for sales territory growth.

- Interface with the information related to analyzing the data we currently have in TNS.
- Assist management in developing an annual business plan that optimizes growth in our nutritional segment and profitability for the territory.
- Assist area management in implementing nutritional marketing and sales plans; establish and meet R&D goals; and network with industry representatives, sales staff, and branded product personnel to expand sales opportunities.
- Assist in the development of new plant nutrition products and programs.
- Build product and market knowledge to add understanding and credibility.
- Become the primary contact between customers and Wilbur-Ellis Company field staff in developing and executing an integrated nutritional strategy that optimizes customers our customer’s goals.
- Strictly follow all company policies, which include safety & regulations.
- Participate in industry grower meetings, promoting the sound science and database of Wilbur Ellis’ nutritional offerings and strategies.
- Committee member of the Cascade R&D representing the agronomy department. Responsible for new products, programs, and Branded Product development.
- Be part of the agronomy team to create a vision for the future.
Skills and Qualifications Desired:
- Good interpersonal and team-building skills with a positive attitude and ability to establish relationships with field personnel, peers, and customers.
- Four years experience or Master's degree in Soil Science or above
- Background In Plant Physiology
- Knowledge of agricultural production and sound soil science.
- Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills to small and large groups with an ability to lead and influence
- Detail and accuracy orientation with an ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
- Willingness to travel
- Physically able to endure outdoor climates, including hot or cold weather extremes.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of fertilizers (dry and liquid).
- Proficient with computers utilizing Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office Suite applications.
Compensation and Benefits:
- In compliance with all states and cities requiring transparency of pay, the base compensation for this position ranges from $62,500 to $83,367. Note that salary may vary based on location, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for vacation, holidays, health, dental, vision, mental health, retirement plans, and other benefits.
