Summary:
The Area Manager is responsible for strategic leadership and day to day operational management of a senior living community while also providing leadership and oversight to a regional group of communities within the portfolio. The primary objective of the Area Manager is to ensure operations and practices within those communities are aligned to Five Star’s strategic goals, with an ongoing focus on driving operational excellence and profitability. The Area Manager achieves this through a focus on community leadership, the financial management and health of the community, sales and occupancy management and growth, team leadership and development, and resident experience, while actively promoting Five Star’s mission, philosophies and values in all daily interactions with employees, residents and families
Responsibilities:
The following specifications may differ depending upon the number of available employees among whom the performance of a particular job function can be distributed and the size and type of Community.
- Leads all functions in the community including team member development and engagement, business office operations, resident and family satisfaction; resident census management; regulatory and budget compliance, and sales and marketing activities to ensure effective operations and alignment with community and company goals.
- Ensures sounds fiscal management of the communities through the development, management and adherence to the budget; completion of timely, accurate and comprehensive fiscal reports; approval of capital expenditures; ensures the collection of rents and other monies due; and ensures the submission of payments to corporate AP.
- Partners with regional, divisional and corporate leadership on short and long term planning for the community and communities within the portfolio, including supporting and implementation of change management initiatives.
- Oversees the development of the annual operating budget for communities within the portfolio, including review and approval to help ensure financial goals are achieved.
- Ensures the timely tracking and entry of community-based data and key indicators to ensure accurate insights that support the proper operational and financial strategic planning, decision making and resource allocation at the community, regional and corporate levels.
- Responsible for hiring, training, coaching and developing team members across many functional areas, including community Executive Directors, in line with company policies, practices and compliance requirements. Serves as a mentor to EDs within the portfolio with a focus on their ongoing learning and development.
- Assesses the effectiveness of ED’s and leadership teams, diagnosing performance concerns/opportunities to identify root cause, and offering effective and holistic solutions to build/develop greater organizational capability.
- Partners and consults with regional and divisional Human Resources regarding employee performance, disciplinary and termination matters to understand company policy/practice.
- Regularly tracks and reviews key staffing metrics to ensure appropriate staffing levels that support the unique needs of community and residents while managing to the budget and fiscal health of the community.
- Monitors compliance with state and federal regulations applicable to the facilities and works with department heads or corporate legal as needed.
- Cultivates a positive resident experience, engagement and retention by continually monitoring and engaging with operational leaders in each service area and making changes as needed.
- In partnership with the Regional Director of Sales and community-based sales teams, drives the sales strategy and goals, understands the competitive market and develops marketing plans and services that meet the needs of the local community while achieving budgeted census targets.
- Fosters a smooth functioning, efficient operation through the timely and effective resolution of grievances from residents, families and/or staff, while addressing escalated issues from other communities.
- Analyzes, benchmarks, and reacts to business, operations and human resource metrics to drive results. Uses these metrics to quickly spot trends that could positively or adversely affect store operations and provide solutions that will improve future systems and processes, providing regular feedback and recommendations to Executive Directors and Upper Field Support Leaders.
- Prepares and presents periodic reports as required by regulatory agencies and the Company, such as, but not limited to: notifications to local, state and federal agencies as required by law; operations reports; financial variance reports; monthly summary reports; quarterly reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Divisional Vice President.
Must meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Master's Degree, 1+ year supervisory/budgetary experience or
- Bachelor's Degree, 3+ years supervisory / budgetary experience or
- Associate's Degree, 5+ years supervisory / budgetary experience or
- High School Diploma or GED, 7+ years supervisory / budgetary experience
- Licensed and/or State Certified AL/SNF Administrator
Advanced Criteria:
- Any of the following industry recognized certification preferred:
- Certified Director of Assisted Living (CDAL) - Senior Living Certification Commission (SLCC)/Argentum
- Certified Assisted Living Administrator (CALA) - American College of Healthcare Administrators (ACHCE)
- Residential Care and Assisted Living Administrators (RC / AL) Certification – National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB)
