The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The position filled through this announcement will serve in Capital Litigation of the Criminal Justice Division.
Job Title: Assistant Attorney General
Job Summary:
Attorneys in this section handle post-conviction litigation in cases in which the death penalty was imposed beginning at the direct appeal stage and continuing through all state and federal habeas corpus cases. In addition, attorneys in this section also provide assistance on interlocutory appeals in potential death penalty cases as well as advice to district attorneys who try the cases.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Handles appeals: Prepares briefs on behalf of the State in murder direct appeals and in habeas corpus cases in state and federal courts.
- Litigates cases:
- Participates in evidentiary hearings and appears in state and federal habeas cases to argue motions and appeals;
- Prepares final orders in state habeas corpus cases;
- Researches and prepares pleadings, motions and briefs;
- Works with expert witnesses.
- Conducts research on pertinent legal issues; keeps abreast of recent legislation
Travel, as required, for in-person evidentiary hearings (typically not much travel is required due to hearings being conducted virtually). Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Member of the Georgia Bar AND graduation from an accredited law school.
Position requires strong writing skills. Preference will be given to those who have federal court experience.
Travel is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants who possess one or more items below:
Strong writing and research skills.
Experience in appellate litigation.
Additional Information:
A criminal background check is completed on all candidates; employment is also contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of the background investigation. Candidates that are being strongly considered for the position will also be required to submit a Department of Law employment application & waiver, Georgia Department of Revenue Tax Clearance letter and copies of official college transcripts.
