Academic Advising in the Academic Achievement Center (AAC) aims to meet the advising needs of the undergraduate student population with an emphasis on first year students and students from academically at-risk student populations. The AAC Academic Advising team supports approximately 25% of BSU undergraduate students and is one of five departments located within the AAC. Other AAC departments include: Learning Assistance, Student Accessibility Services, Testing Services, and Transfer Services. We dedicate each day to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion. This position is located on campus in Bridgewater, MA. Opportunities for some remote work may be available in accordance with BSU telecommuting policies.

Position Summary:
The Assistant Director is responsible for the planning, administration, and assessment of academic advising services, with a particular focus on new student orientation, advising, and registration, as well as advising through the first year. The Assistant Director will serve as supervisor to a cohort of graduate assistants working in Academic Advising. Under the leadership of the Director of Academic Advising, the Assistant Director will foster a welcoming, inclusive, and equitable culture for racially and socioeconomically diverse student populations as they transition into Bridgewater State University. The Assistant Director will help inform students on the processes involved and information needed for a successful transition to BSU. The Assistant Director will implement student engagement practices that support persistence and retention. This position will focus on meeting the diverse needs of all students including: African American/Black, Latinx, White, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native, Multiracial and first-generation college students. These efforts support the overall success of our student population.

Essential Duties:
Assist with all daily operations of our inclusive, equity-minded advising center:

1. Manage all aspects including design, delivery, and assessment of mandatory first year advising programming and related student resources and advisor training materials with a focus on student engagement and success. Identify trends and best practices and review student survey materials to recommend improvements or changes to the 5 touchpoints of the program.2. Manage all aspects of planning, administration, communication, training, reporting, and assessment of the pre-registration process for all incoming freshmen during the student orientation programs. Manage development and logistics of course placement reports, student communications, academic advising sessions offered during BSU Checkpoints, training staff and faculty, and collaboration across divisions with staff and faculty to execute new student orientation advising programming that engages and supports incoming freshmen.3. Supervise Graduate Assistant academic advisors and oversee supervision including hiring, onboarding, training, ongoing support, mentorship, and development.4. Use inclusive practices to assist the Director with development of strategic planning and assessment practices for advising.5. Maintain an advising caseload of undergraduate students that may include first year, Undecided, and students in academic difficulty including freshmen on probation and students returning from academic dismissal; provide ongoing relationship building, academic counseling for degree completion, and make referrals to appropriate resources and services on campus to support a sense of belonging and students overall success.6. Provide academic counseling and referrals and conduct exit interviews for students seeking withdrawal from the University.7. Identify equity gaps relevant to the first year experience and collaborate with campus partners to develop effective solutions that improve the student experience.8. Use equity-oriented practices to assess advising data, prepare reports, and monitor the needs of the target population, recommending new initiatives that encourage involvement and empower learning amongst first year students.9. Cultivate positive working relationships with AAC colleagues as well as faculty as advising liaison to specific departments or college(s).10. Contribute to AAC and university strategic goals that impact student retention, success, diversity and inclusion.11. Carry out other professional tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
1. Masters degree2. Minimum of 3 years experience in academic advising.3. Commitment to customer service excellence to enhance an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion.4. Strong computer skills and a demonstrated history of working closely with information technology.5. Ability to communicate appropriately and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Supervisory experience.2. Knowledge of DegreeWorks and Banner systems.3. Experience planning, executing, and assessing advising programming.4. Demonstrated presentation skills.5. Language proficiency in Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, and/or French.
