The Department of Teaching and Learning (EDTL) at Loyola Marymount University is seeking a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor to serve as the Academic Program Director of the Special Education programs and teach graduate level courses for those enrolled in a Traditional student teaching program and an alternative certification program or Internship. Specific areas of competency should include: inclusive PK-12 special education teacher education for traditional public, non-public, and/or charter schools, focusing on Education Specialist Mild to Moderate support needs and dual general education and special education credential teacher preparation.
The Department is committed to the preparation of teachers who can teach all learners with programs located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, the Central Valley and Los Angeles areas. Applicants must have expertise in preparing teachers to effectively work with students in PK-12 settings with disabilities, are English learners, or gifted and talented. Expertise in the edTPA is a desired qualification. Additional course remissions will be provided if the applicant can also serve as the edTPA coordinator for the Special Education credential program. Since the General Education credential programs are offered throughout California, the Visiting Assistant Professor will be expected to travel.
The Visiting Assistant Professor of Teaching and Learning will oversee and support the Special Education programs. The incumbent will be expected to ensure the quality of instruction for both online and face to face courses throughout the programs and support all facets of learning environment consistent with the University and School mission. The incumbent will encourage a culture of learning that values mutual responsibility, ethics, respect, life-long learning, personal and professional development and advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
Key Job Elements:
  • Provide leadership in the implementation of the Special Education credential programs.
  • Teach courses in the Special Education Credential programs and Master of Arts programs (Courses may focus on Educational Foundations, Special Education, Teaching Methodology, Assessment, Collaboration, and Research Methodology embedded in the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion).
  • Lead the preparation of candidates in a teaching credential program to meet the needs of students with disabilities with an emphasis on inclusion and the intersectionality.
  • Actively participate in School and Department initiatives which promote diversity, equity, and inclusion and anti-racism.
  • Work closely with the Department Chair and other faculty and staff to support programs in the Department and collaborate with partners including Teach for America, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, various charter management organizations and traditional public school districts.
  • Participate in SOE program retention and recruitment activities, work closely with faculty, program directors, fieldwork instructors and part-time faculty.
  • Assist the Director for Student Success with program assessment, development and evaluation.
  • Represent LMU at various constituent meetings and participate in required program, department, and school activities.
  • Demonstrate strong skills for implementing research based, evidenced based, or data driven educational programing decisions, and the ability to foster collaboration among colleagues, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a high level of digital literacy and ability to teach at the graduate level.
  • Participate in all SOE and departmental activities for continuous improvement and accreditation.
Qualifications:
  • An earned doctorate or ABD in Education or related field
  • Possession of a valid California Education Specialist teaching or administrative credential
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the EdTPA is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) standards as well as additional state, national, and other applicable licensure and accreditation standards in the area of Special Education.
  • Knowledge and skills related to clinical practice and fieldwork supervision and training
  • Extensive teaching or administrative experience with urban and multicultural PK-12 traditional public schools, non-public schools, and/or charter schools, which serve students with various abilities and language backgrounds.
  • Knowledge and skills in preparing candidates in an alternative certification program to teach students with disabilities with an emphasis on inclusion and the intersectionality among all learners including special education, literacy, general teaching methodology, differentiated instruction, universal design for learning, assessment, and equity.
  • Ability to teach and support all candidates in the Special Education and General Education programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Professional interest that aligns with the University and School of Education mission of offering anti-racist and social justice education
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse and under-resourced communities.
  • Demonstrated experience developing curriculum for teaching diversity, equity, and inclusion, cultural competence, and/or cultural humility, and anti-racism
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, advocacy, and activism

Schedule Information: Graduate level courses are held in the late afternoon and evenings on weekdays and in the morning or afternoon on Saturdays. Undergraduate level courses are taught in the late afternoon and evenings on weekdays. Courses may also be offered on-line. The Visiting Assistant Professor will be expected to travel to different LMU regional sites in Northern and Southern California.
Contract Terms: The full-time Visiting Assistant Professor for Urban Education is expected to begin in May 15, 2023.
