Roles & Responsibilities:

The Voloudakis lab at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is seeking a highly motivated individual for a Senior Animal Behavior Scientist with experience in targeted genetic manipulation. The post will suit an ambitious and talented individual who is interested in applying his/her skills at the interface of human disease genetics and animal behavior.

The appointed researcher will be embedded in an interdisciplinary team of clinicians bioinformaticians, statistical geneticists and computational biologists with the goal to jump start the lab’s wet lab efforts and supervise staff while it grows. We are part of the Center for Disease Neurogenomics (CDN) and our group is focused on identifying downstream translational applications of genetic and genomic findings in neuropsychiatric diseases.

Job Description:

  • Under supervision from the Principal Investigator (PI), develop and conduct complex animal or rodent behavioral testing, interpret data, identify potential problems, and find solutions.
  • Under supervision from the Principal Investigator (PI), develop and conduct targeted drug delivery and gene expression manipulation experiments (e.g. stereotaxic injection of overexpression/ knockdown/ CRISPR vectors/ viruses), interpret data, identify potential problems and find solutions.
  • As lab grows, train and supervise junior staff and trainees.
  • Assist in preparation of protocol applications and ensure compliance with animal care and occupational safety regulations (IACUC) and good laboratory practices to adhere to the National Institute of Health's (NIH) rigor and transparency requirements.
  • Research literature in the field to further improve and optimize approaches.
  • Perform supporting (primary) cell culture experiments and molecular biology assays.
  • Responsible for maintaining the lab’s animal model colonies.
  • Conduct experiments and collect and analyze data using various degrees of statistical methodology, spreadsheet (Excel). Explore possibilities for automation of behavioral testing.
  • Assist in drafting relevant manuscripts and grant proposals.
  • Assist in managing the laboratory space by maintaining necessary supplies and equipment and interfacing with veterinary staff and other research scientists.
  • Follow standard operating procedures and maintain accurate records and documentation to comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion and cultural awareness through actions, interactions and communications with others.

Requirements:

  • Requires a PhD degree program in Chemistry, Biology, Physiology, Biochemistry or Molecular Biology, or a closely related field to be familiar with research terminology and scientific techniques.
  • Highly motivated and organized.
  • One to three (1-3) years of relevant (see above) post-doctoral experience.
  • Requires the manual dexterity to operate complex equipment.
  • Requires familiarity with statistical and research methodology.

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $67648 - $101472 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need.
