The Collector/Biller is responsible for the effective and creative use of proven follow-up techniques, and self-directed initiative, to contact patients and third-party payers to collect payments and resolve outstanding account balances.

The Collector/Biller manages several tasks related to patient accounts for hospital and clinical facilities. Due to the nature of the job, the Biller/Collector have to interact with and manage patients on a regular basis.

Job Duties

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Responsible for maintaining the collection and follow-up function in a professional manner in order to most effectively achieve the hospital’s cash collection and accounts receivable management objectives.
  • Responsible for managing their assigned accounts in an organized and efficient manner.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a thorough, current knowledge of industry standards and payer requirements. This includes the responsibility to develop an understanding of hospital-based services and to ensure that these services are properly reflected on claims billed to payers and the subsequent payments received from those payers.
  • Responsible for ensuring that cash collections are maximized while the level of outstanding accounts receivable is maintained at or below defined targets.
  • Assists in transmittal of billings to third-party payors, either manually or electronically.

Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business preferred but not required.

Experience: Prefer 2 years of medical billing, general accounting, accounts receivable and collections experience. Experience in a hospital environment desirable.

Knowledge: Prefer knowledge of general accounting, medical billing, accounts receivable and collections. Knowledge and skills working with computerized accounting systems required.
