Job Summary
2023 Camp Adventure! provides programming during approximately 15 days of summer school for the students of Atherton and Blackshear Elementary Schools. These summer camp sessions provide STEM and literacy curriculum, materials and books for students who can benefit from learning resources and who may otherwise not be able to experience the sense of community and engaging activities that the summer camp experience provides. This year of Camp Adventure will be a hybrid experience for campers (students). They will be on campus with materials and support from their counselors (classroom teachers) but will tune in live to Camp Adventure staff via a live stream in their cabins (classrooms).
Camp Adventure Assistant Directors will support the Childrens Museum Houston with daily summer camp operations including the preparation of camp materials in the days leading up to camp, familiarizing counselors with camp activities and the mentoring and instruction of campers.
The Camp Adventure Assistant Directors will also participate in Museum training on various camp roles and responsibilities. At the end of camp, assistant directors will gather and organize materials belonging to the Museum and Foundation and assist with packing up and clearing out from the school.
Essential Tasks
- Transport weekly activity materials between Childrens Museum Houston and assigned school campus.
- Prepare classrooms for daily activities.
- Implement an integrated literacy and STEM curriculum that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the campers.
- Modify lessons and activities as needed to reflect needs and accommodations for individual differences.
- Monitor and observe classrooms during camp sessions.
- Assist counselors as needed in the facilitation of camp activities.
- Model and encourage a positive, inclusive, and respectful attitude for campers that helps maintain a standard of camp behavior.
- Maintain open communication with Camp Adventure and Houston ISD staff.
Working Conditions
COVID vaccine required.
Work will be conducted off-site at Atherton and/or Blackshear Elementary Schools.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
- Knowledge of CMH rules and policies
- Strong communication skills (communicate with both adults and children in manner appropriate for their age)
- Enthusiastic team player who is willing to go the extra mile to ensure campers have a positive, memorable summer camp experience.
- Ability to work independently to accomplish the Museums goals with limited supervision
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and strategic thinking
- Highly organized
- Ability to work in a flexible teamwork environment, problem solve, and respond to the needs of the Camp Adventure program and its campers.
- Ability to prioritize big-picture ideas and execute them into tangible actions
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a diverse variety of individuals
- Computer skills in virtual meeting platforms (Microsoft Teams preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to use own transportation locally and have a valid Texas Drivers License with appropriate insurance coverage.
Education Required
- Minimum of a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.
- Texas Teacher Certificate appropriate for level and/or subject area of assignment.
Physical Requirements
May occasionally be asked to lift or move objects of up to 25 pounds.
