Scope: Plans, directs, implements, and coordinates a full suite of Sierra Club clean energy initiatives to move beyond fossil fuels in Texas. The Campaign Representative has program responsibility for the planning, coordination and implementation of the Beyond Coal campaign electric sector strategies and activities with particular attention to coal plant retirements, stopping new gas plants, and utility policy within the transition from coal to clean energy. In consultation with volunteers, partners, and staff, the Campaign Representative coordinates and guides the team of staff and volunteers, ensuring successful implementation of campaign goals, and robust collaboration across teams, campaigns, and Chapters with vested interest in decarbonizing the electric sector. Produces educational materials and reports, does research, testifies, lobbies and serves as a technical resource. Manages day-to-day operational aspects of the Campaign. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media and other organizations. Represents the Campaign in negotiations and settlements in the assigned area. Takes appropriate action to ensure that program goals and objectives are met. Prepares and submits weekly progress reports. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and to the public.


Job activities include but are not limited to:

  • Working with the Campaign to lead the development of an overarching strategic plan for Sierra Club’s work in Texas to transition the electric sector to clean energy. Ensuring that Beyond Coal campaigns are rooted in equity and justice, and coordinated with other national energy campaign priorities.
  • Planning and supporting campaigns to decarbonize the electric sector in collaboration with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Organizing Department, Texas Chapter staff, Communications Department, Digital Strategies, capacities and programs, and volunteer leadership.
  • Tracking policy and regulatory proceedings in Texas that are relevant to the clean energy transition, identifies opportunities for engagement and intervention.
  • In collaboration with the Texas team, engages key players in the transition from coal and gas plants to clean energy, including utility leaders. Supporting and working with partners in frontline communities, labor, and elected and appointed decision makers to advance Beyond Coal priorities and ensure that solutions serve the most vulnerable communities.
  • Working with the national Beyond Coal campaign team, the Communications Department, and the Texas Chapter on communications strategy, messaging, and advocacy materials to achieve local and state objectives. Supporting media outreach related to energy transition.
  • In cooperation with Advancement, participating in donor and foundation solicitation and cultivation, including meeting with funders and preparation of funder presentation, proposals, and reports.
  • Applying equity, inclusion, and justice values to all campaign activities. Operationalizing the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing in all partnership and collaborative activity.
  • Introducing creative ideas and approaches; fostering creativity among team members.
  • Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated understanding of how organized movements create change and accomplish policy objectives
  • Ability to collaboratively design and implement highly strategic, high-impact campaigns that integrate field and online organizing, communications, and legal strategies and tactics.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships based on mutual respect and accountability.
  • Ability to work independently as well as participate and lead in a team across a complex and large scope of responsibility.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, public speaking and media presentation ability
  • Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:

  • Track record of planning and implementing advocacy campaigns, including some of the following:
    • planning and managing a local or state policy or issue campaign
    • working with attorneys and utilizing legal advocacy;
    • media relations and strategic communications;
    • working with senior level organizational, business, and political leaders
  • Patience, strong emotional intelligence, humility and demonstrated ability to create rapport and inspire trust.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $68,500 depending on region/location.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union.

The Sierra Club offers a competitive salary package commensurate with skills and experience plus excellent benefits that include medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a retirement savings 401(k) plan.

This is a category 4 exempt, represented position.
