STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES AND KEY DELIVERABLES:
The Capital Projects Director is accountable for managing from inception to execution of HSE, Sustaining and Growth capital projects for the entire Calumet manufacturing portfolio consisting of Great Falls, Shreveport, Cotton Valley, Princeton, LoMo, Dickinson, Karns City, Royal Purple, and CalPak. The position will build a comprehensive project management team consisting of Calumet employees and third-party contractors placing safety first, complying with all applicable regulations, and following industry accepted PMG protocols. This role will place emphasis on project controls and good fiscal management of the entire capital program (including fiscal management of the Turnaround category) for efficiency and financial planning purposes.

DESCRIPTION:
  • Reports directly to VP-Operations to provide appropriate guidance and visibility.
  • Provide high-level leadership, oversight, guidance, and expertise for Calumet’s capital program from inception through construction.
  • Work with CEO, EVP’s, CFO, and Ops to build the appropriate processes and controls taking size of spend into account.
  • Lead the standardization of controls, reporting, and processes within procurement and finance for all projects. Establish project controls resources and minimum cost tracking expectations for the project portfolio. The expectation is a project controls resource will report to this position.
  • Facilitate a steering committee for periodic cost and schedule reviews for larger projects.
  • Provide expert-level guidance to project teams at each manufacturing site to deliver projects safety, on-time, and on-budget. Project leaders at each site have solid line reporting to site leadership but will have a dotted line relationship to this position.
  • Serve as Calumet’s owner representative on unique major projects that are separate from the normal sustaining capital portfolio.
  • Work with Corporate Development to manage major projects through the FEL gates.
  • Reinforce the culture of adherence to the FEL process with support of executive leadership.
  • Conduct a cold-eyes review of Calumet’s existing PMG process. Develop a plan to upgrade Calumet’s existing capital management work processes and tools to good industry practices. Leverage recommendations from a third-party cold-eyes review.
  • Deploy the upgrade plan across the Calumet portfolio to close identified gaps based on an agreed-upon timeline understanding the project capabilities of personnel at each site.
  • Prepare project and portfolio status reports for the Corporate executive team.
  • Prepare (including Turnaround) and manage the annual planning cycle and notional capital budget for the Calumet manufacturing portfolio.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
  • +10 or more years of both project and construction management experience in the refining, petrochemical, or specialties industry.
  • 10 or more years of prior management experience
  • Proficiency using established project management tools.

PREFERENCES:
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Experience in a fuels refinery, basic chemicals, specialty chemicals, and/or base oils plant is a plus.
  • Experience with cost estimating and scheduling software (i.e. Icarus, Microsoft Project).
