Weiss Construction Company (WCC) is looking for a Senior Construction Estimator with 7+ years of experience in Industrial and heavy commercial projects. The ideal candidate has experience bidding on large GC projects but self-perform is an added bonus. The position works out of the Novi office. Job responsibilities:
- Prepare detailed accurate material, labor, equipment, subcontracts, construction facilities, estimates, etc. (And ability to prepare T&M Estimates).
- Foster relationships with subcontractors and suppliers.
- Attend on-site pre-bid/proposal conferences and site visits.
- Develop and review subcontractor scopes of work and accept, review, and analyze subcontractor quotes for best value.
- Develop RFI's and clarifications and ensure adequate subcontractor coverage.
- Performs a comprehensive "bid day" analysis and scoping of specific assigned trades.
- Understands how to fit subs to the size/scope of the project.
- Create bid lists that fit the scope of the job, ensuring that we have the right subs for the project.
- Prepare project bid status reports and ensure compliance with all specifications and contract Statements of Work and Bid invitations.
- Present cost estimates to meet customer proposals, providing consideration for general and special conditions.
- Prepare scope specifications and requirements, prepare and input project schedules, perform quantity takeoffs, prepare cost summary sheets, and input quantities into estimating software.
- Maintain an accurate, current database cost codes of account for historical data.
- Properly turn over bid documents and sub buyout information to Project Management in a timely manner.
- Review documents with the Project Management team and highlight areas of concern.
- Review job cost with the Project Management team and highlight any subs/material vendors that still need to be awarded.
- Complete project kick-off form to ensure compliance.
- Review company jobs and compare on a timely basis to as-sold estimates to confirm the accuracy of the estimate.
- Review bid requirements thoroughly and ask follow-up questions as needed.
- Include value-engineering ideas on every bid (working with Sr. Estimator).
- Prepare Subcontracting MBE/Diversity Plan when required.
- Involved in market and client selection for the respective business segment (Sales Plan Development and tracking).
- Share information about reliable subcontractors and suppliers with other Estimators.
- Maintain a relationship with the client during the actual project to ensure client satisfaction with the project and the company.
- Lead initiatives to seek value engineering ideas and solutions for customers and owners during the bidding and construction phase.
- Provide other services as directed including change order pricing, site visits, bid delivery, and occasional collaboration with teams for other project locations on specific bids.
- Compute cost factors and prepare estimates used for management purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work; preparing bids; selecting vendors or subcontractors; and determining cost-effectiveness.
- Conduct special studies to develop and establish standard hour and related cost data or effect cost reductions.
- Organize and manage a centralized cost estimating database and a formal process to support cost estimating to ensure historical data is utilized.
- Analyze completed projects to compare estimated costs to actual costs and determine the reason for any discrepancies.
- Provides improvement recommendations to cost estimating procedures to reduce future discrepancies between estimated and actual costs.
- Training and Development of novice Estimators and Estimating Support.
- Additional duties as directed by the supervisor.
Required education and experience:
- 4-year degree in Construction or Engineering.
- 5-7 years related estimating experience.
- 7-10 years related estimating experience.
- Advanced project estimator skills that include performing engineering calculations, being conversant in engineering nomenclature to effectively communicate with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, Project Managers, Plant Engineering, and vendors.
- Strong analytical skills and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to read, understand and organize construction plans and specifications.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal structure while exercising great judgment.
- Strong ability to multitask, prioritize, and work well under pressure to meet established deadlines.
- Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office (Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and database software.
- Ability to utilize estimating software such as HCSS Heavy Bid.
- Physical and environmental requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Employment is contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screen.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $150,000.00 per year
