Overview Reporting to the President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) the Chief Strategy & Growth Officer (CSGO) plays a pivotal leadership role in strategic growth and long-term value creation at Apex. In partnership with the CEO and as part of the executive team, the CSGO is responsible for leading the development and execution of Apex’s strategic growth initiatives across the company. The strategic growth initiatives will align with the Value Creation Plan (VCP) that is developed by Apex and Morgan Stanley Capital Partners (MSCP) and approved by the Board of Directors.

The CSGO is a business and functional expert with strong foundational skills and comprehensive industry experience in all aspects of organic and inorganic growth including market & industry analysis, market development & expansion, competitive analysis, strategic account development, relationship management, mergers & acquisitions, and the development, measurement, compensation, and optimization of direct sales professionals.
The CSGO will lead continued rapid growth with existing accounts, drive cross-sell and will accelerate sales to new logos by enhancing targeting of marketing to and selling to new accounts. The CSGO brings strong working knowledge in mergers & acquisitions and is active in identifying priority areas for inorganic growth and facilitating the integration of acquired entities and their business development efforts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The effective performance of these duties requires exceptional capabilities in critical thinking, strategy development, business modeling, opportunity/risk assessment, sales and marketing strategy & tactics, client engagement, interpersonal relations, team leadership & dynamics, cross-selling and cross-functional collaboration.

Strategy

  • Analyze market developments, industry shifts and trends, competitive developments, client buying patterns, etc. that help shape strategic growth decisions and priorities and drive build vs. buy decision making process.
  • Identify new value-creation opportunities for Apex (market-competing and market-creating)
  • Develop the company’s go to market strategy and narrative in support of the Value Creation Plan.
  • Identify and lead specific strategic growth strategies, tactics and initiatives across new and existing sectors, end markets and accounts.
  • Assist in the identification, assessment, and integration of strategic acquisitions that align with Apex’s inorganic growth priorities in support of the Value Creation Plan.

Growth

  • Establish and lead short and long-term organic growth initiatives.
  • Recruit, retain and develop a growth team (sales & marketing) with the requisite skills and abilities necessary to execute and sustain organic/inorganic growth in support of the VCP and established annual financial goals.
  • Lead the partnership between the growth team and senior operational managers/staff to optimize sales performance across new and existing accounts (national and regional) across all practice areas and end markets.
  • Provide direct leadership (strategic, tactical, account, individual), coaching and mentoring to the growth team to maximize their and their teams’ effectiveness. and build competencies in new business development, existing account expansion, client retention and sales/operations dynamics.
  • Oversee strategic account acquisition, development, and expansion by the growth team. This includes establishing effective cross-selling priorities and activities across the Apex portfolio.
  • Build strong relationships with senior decision makers at key clients and target clients.
  • Identify, assess, and establish new strategic partnerships and evaluate and implement alternative revenue channels (as appropriate)
  • Design, implement and manage accurate sales forecasting, planning, and budgeting processes. Track, analyze, and report sales performance, effective trend analysis and invest/divest decisions.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serve as a highly visible and engaged member of the Apex Executive Leadership Team supporting strategic initiatives, company events, company and Board level reports and presentations, and key executive team activities.
  • Help enhance the Apex brand and value proposition through strategy development, sustained organic growth, the acquisition and development of exceptional talent, and the continued focus and investment in maintaining a healthy and vibrant company culture.
  • Internally, contribute to senior leadership discussions on key strategic matters. Provide market insights, trends, and voice of the client to the leadership team.
  • Partner with the executive team and technical leaders to facilitate continuous improvement and innovation across digital strategies and toolsets developed or acquired by the company.
  • Contribute to the improvement of internal systems and processes that will help the company better identify, assess, and track performance data and forward-looking indicators.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Technical Background and Credibility:
  • 15+ years in consulting or professional services, with at least 5+ years in environmental/infrastructure engineering and consulting services companies.
  • Fluent in the technical terms and concepts, with a proven ability to gain credibility with engineers and stakeholders both internally and with clients.
Sales Leadership:
  • 5+ years in revenue focused executive leadership roles (growth, strategy, sales, marketing…etc), with experience leading a highly consultative sales and marketing team.
  • Led a commercial team to achieve 10%+ organic growth year-over-year for at least three consecutive years.
  • Managed effective balance of hunter / gatherer sales approaches to achieve aggressive sales targets and drive sustainable revenue growth.
  • Track record of supporting new logo acquisition through lead generation, pipeline development, and strong sales execution.
  • Demonstrated comfort in a hands-on “player-coach” leadership role, with track record of cultivating positive relationships with client senior leadership and key decisions makers.
Go-to-Market Strategy:
  • Remarkable understanding of current market trends, with proven ability to ensure customer’s needs are understood and translated into effective value proposition and GTM strategies.
  • Customer-centric focus that breaks departmental silos and aligns teams to work towards a common future. Provides easy, high-level cross-department insights with an eye on growth.
  • Leverages performance metrics to drive accountability, ensuring decisions and activity continue to align with the established GTM strategy.
  • Possesses financial acumen, demonstrated by the ability to tie sales and marketing initiatives directly to financial results, both internally and with clients.
  • A doer, who actively maneuvers strategy into tangible execution tactics and deliverables.
Mergers and Acquisitions:
  • Held a leadership role in 5+ acquisitions, with a depth of understanding in the acquisition and integration process.
  • Track-record of leadership through M&A integration on the commercial side, incorporating the acquired company into the GTM strategy in order to optimize synergies and market opportunities.
  • Flexible and collaborative approach to bringing the sales, marketing and account management teams together into a consistent approach, while still accommodating the unique value of the acquired company.
Leadership and Team Management:
  • Empowering leader who creates a collaborative and trust-based environment with their business heads to set and deliver on objectives.
  • Hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves mentality, with ability to manage the day-to-day personally engaging with numbers and details, balanced with the ability to delegate and manage a team appropriately.
  • Key member of the leadership team who has proactively partnered with executives across operations, business development, sales, and human resources to set / deliver on KPIs and performance objectives.
  • A confident and articulate communicator, capable of inspiring strong collaboration in an organization. Polished written/verbal presentation with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A strategic yet involved leader, a player-coach with the ability to execute quickly and decisively and be genuinely enthusiastic about finding innovative solutions to complex problems.
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in from a reputable institution. Preference for a degree in engineering.
