Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Child Nutrition Executive Director, the Child Nutrition Van Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of food, supplies, mail, and small equipment to/from schools and from the commodity warehouse. The van driver’s job is to drive, load and unload the van. Make deliveries, pick-up supplies, and perform other duties as requested by the Manager and Supervisor. Any other additional duties may be assigned by supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Loads into van prepared food in transport carriers, shipments of supplies, cases of food, USDA commodities, etc.;
  • Transports cooked food in proper containers at all times;
  • Delivers material via child nutrition delivery van, cooperate with school personnel in correct placement of materials, and obtain authorized signature from school for their receipt within a specified timeframe;
  • Being patient and courteous at all times when working with the child nutrition employees and Administrative Staff;
  • Drives assigned routes in a timely and safe manner;
  • Drives delivery van and coordinates the maintenance and repairs of this equipment with the Supervisor;
  • Complies with preventive maintenance program for van;
  • Always maintains a clean van for weekly inspections;
  • Performs pre/post trip inspections of van at the beginning and end of day;
  • Abides by all traffic regulations and laws;
  • Attends safety and in-service training meetings scheduled by CN Executive Director;
  • Properly notifies appropriate personnel when it is necessary to be off the van;
  • Makes recommendations to supervisor of unsafe stops and other unsafe conditions;
  • Makes a conscientious effort to make delivery of food and supplies accurately as instructed;
  • Reports all accidents and damage to vehicle/van to the supervisor immediately;
  • Ensures vehicle/van is locked and secure when not in use; and
  • Performs assignment where only school district employees are allowed in the Child Nutrition Van;
  • Performs duties at the school, if time permits, as assigned by the Manager.

Education and Experience

  • Required: Must have a high school diploma or G. E. D.;
  • Must be at least twenty-one years of age and in good mental and physical health. Must be able to pass a drug/alcohol screening test;
  • Ability to perform oral and/or written instructions, have physical ability to perform heavy manual labor;
  • Must be courteous and neat in appearance;
  • Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver License (Class D Chauffeur’sLicense preferred);
  • Must provide for telephone communication at home and at other place of employment if applicable;
  • Must possess ability to make sound decisions and use good judgment; and
  • Must wear clean and appropriate uniform as required by the CN Office.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • Training Requirements: Complete district and Child Nutrition Training as scheduled

  • Strong oral and writing skills;Must be able to communicate successfully with school personnel and the public;
  • Must have the ability to work under the pressure of deadlines, interruptions, and the ability to deal with other employees in such a way as to maintain their goodwill;
  • Must be able to respond appropriately to supervision and accept recommendations;
  • Must demonstrate sensitivity/understanding in interpersonal relations with persons of diverse cultures/backgrounds; and
  • Must have ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements rarely;

Performance Evaluation

The employee will be evaluated based on the above position using either two methods: via COMPASS or a NOLA-PS evaluating instrument. If the employee holds an Educational Leadership certification, he/she will be evaluated via COMPASS to ensure renewal of certification.
