Job Summary

Teleworking employees are required to live in Minnesota or a bordering state in a county along the Minnesota state line.

The purpose of this position is to advance the Department of Revenue' s mission to achieve compliance with Minnesota Tax Laws. Specialists in this position will provide service to internal and external customers necessary to determine proper compliance with all provisions of the Minnesota Cigarette, Tobacco, and Alcohol excise tax statutes.

This position will conduct field audit examinations of the cigarette, tobacco, and alcohol excise tax returns, informational reports, and other associated tax information by applying appropriate tax law, policy, and procedures. These duties will consist of conducting field audit examinations, providing customer service to the public, and completing other assigned procedures and duties. The specialist will provide service and education to external and internal customers. This position requires substantial fieldwork and may require occasionally overnight travel.

The candidates hired and new to this job classification may be eligible to receive a $5,000 hiring bonus! This bonus will be paid in two increments, with the first payment made after successfully passing the probationary period.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of professional-level accounting or auditing experience

AND

Any of the following from an accredited college or university:

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Business Management or Marketing;
  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Accountancy, Finance, or Taxation; or
  • CPA

OR

Certification (satisfactory completion of probation) as a Revenue Tax Specialist

Must have reliable transportation or a valid class D driver's license

Applicants who meet the above experience requirements will be further evaluated based on the following:

  • Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices
  • Technical tax knowledge, including court rulings, regulations and administrative policies and procedures
  • Customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to plan, direct and review the work of others
  • Knowledge of personal computer operation and software programs used by the department in its internal and external operations
  • Communication and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of audit report processing procedures
  • Knowledge of electronic filing/processing systems
  • Skill in reading comprehension
  • Skill in problem-solving

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge conducting audit examinations related to the cigarette, tobacco, and alcohol excise taxes.
  • Knowledge conducting audit examinations.
  • Experience working with state statutes or rules in a regulatory environment.
  • Experience working in career fields involving direct customer service interactions with the public.
  • Experience working effectively both as a member of a team and independently.

Physical Requirements

Requires occasional moving of articles such as boxes, accounting records, laptop computer, and portable printer up to 50 pounds.

Additional Requirements

Prior to an offer of employment, a background check will be conducted. This will include, but is not limited to checking degrees and licensures, criminal history, and tax filing and payment history. All individual income tax filing and payment obligations must be current prior to interviewing for this position.
