The Job Description
General Statement of Duties
Performs intermediate semi-skilled work in the supervision of operations and maintenance of the County’s Civic Center.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class plans, coordinates, organizes, provides and supervises staff in coordinating and managing the operation of events at the Civic Center conference center facilities. Work involves setting up for events, cleaning up before and after events, and providing all technical direction and support during the events. The position coordinates technical equipment including lighting, sound, multi-media, general set-up and general operations of the facilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Civic Center Manager and is evaluated in terms of successful operations, customer satisfaction, program and cost effectiveness, and through observation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Sets up stages, tables, chairs, and associated equipment to client specifications for events and functions; cleans facility before and after events; cleans floors, walls, windows, kitchen, bathrooms, walkways, and other facility components.
- Creates and/or revises event floorplans based on client requests, space requirements, and safety standards.
- Provides monitoring and technical support for events and productions held at the facility; sets up public announcement system, makes coffee, re-arranges room as needed, makes copies, hangs banners and provides other assistance to clients and customers.
- Insures proper working condition of all commercial kitchen equipment prior to catered events.
- Directs and assists in maintenance and repair activities involving plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, painting and related work; procures and interacts with contractors as needed.
- Uses hand tools and power tools and operates various types of small and large equipment.
- Supervises all load-ins and load-outs.
- Purchase facility equipment and supplies following established County purchasing procedures and budgetary guidelines.
- Prepares monthly inventory and event log and other records of work activities.
- Serves on the County Safety Committee.
- Evaluates and makes recommendations to the Director for renovations, upgrades, equipment replacement, major repairs, and any other matters related to the maintenance of the facility and contents.
- May occasionally operate a scissor lift for event preparation and facility maintenance.
Additional Job Duties
- Must be prepared to work flexible hours in accordance with the Center’s schedule of events, which will include some nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Performs related duties as required.
Recruitment and Selection Guidelines
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge on commercial building upkeep, maintenance and inventory.
- Considerable knowledge of OSHA regulations.
- General knowledge of commercial kitchen equipment for catered events.
- General knowledge of minor electrical, plumbing, and HVAC maintenance and repair principles and practices.
- Skilled in the use of common computer technologies, to include email, Internet, word processors, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, mobile applications, and data entry.
- Ability to learn and use event floorplan software.
- Ability to read and understand floor plans, event orders and set-up directions, and to plan ahead to ensure adequate staffing, supplies, and equipment.
- Ability to effectively set priorities, multi-task, and manage project completion in a reasonable time line.
- Ability to remain flexible and positive in an environment of continuous change.
- Ability to express ideas and communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public and demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to effectively supervise, schedule, and inspect the work of departmental employees and perform such tasks as required in the cleaning, maintenance, repair, security, event monitoring, event set-up and event break down.
- Ability to prepare event sites in accordance with the work orders and schedules issued by the Civic Center Manager and/or Director.
- Ability to work with considerable independence in planning and directing all function set-up, maintenance, janitorial activities, and inspection of completed work.
Physical Requirements
- Work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
- Work frequently standing, using hands and fingers to handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms requires walking, sitting, speaking, hearing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, lifting and repetitive motions.
- Visual acuity is required for ability to adjust focus and close vision.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Work requires using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Work occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places (occasionally up to 20 feet high on a scissor lift and/or ladder), exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
- Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and moderate experience in facilities operation and maintenance and minimal supervisory and hospitality experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire.
