Job Description

Come join the Iowa DOT to support the statewide Motor Carrier Services Team! This is an exciting position that supports several major programs in Iowa: International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), International Registration Plan (IRP), Intrastate Authority, Titling of commercial vehicles, and Oversize/Overweight Permitting. We also administer the statewide system for titling, registration and license plate issuance for 4.5 million personal vehicles in Iowa and for commercial vehicle title and registration.

Shift: Monday to Friday; 40 hours a week

Location: Customer Service Bureau, Motor Vehicle Division, Ankeny, Iowa 50021

What you will need to succeed in this position:

  • Ability to review applications for accuracy based on established laws, rules and procedures
  • Experience entering data into a complex IT transactional system to fulfill orders or programs
  • Customer service experience for fulfillment of mail and on-line orders
  • Written communication experience, especially to communicate clearly and concisely with customers through e-mails and business letters
  • Verbal communication experience, specifically to resolve customer issues through phone calls

The specific tasks for this position may include any or all of the following:


  • Ensure carriers have the information and tools to renew IFTA and IRP annually, file quarterly IFTA fuel tax reports and obtain the necessary documentation to run IFTA and IRP
  • Issue intrastate permits/certificates to qualified carriers and ensuring that carrier insurance filings are met.
  • Manage the issuance of permits to operate oversize/overweight vehicles on Iowa s interstate and primary highway systems.
  • Manage the issuance of annual and single-trip permits
  • Review and fulfill applications for pro-rate titles used by commercial vehicles
  • Scan and archive records for all these functions and others as directed

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Experience equal to three years of full-time clerical or closely related work;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalency or satisfactory completion of a recognized correspondence or formal job-related training course at the high school or equivalent level such as that offered by WIN, OEO, CEP, CIVEC or similar programs, for one year only of the required experience;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting nine months or thirty semester hours coursework in an accredited business school, college or university for each year of the required experience;

OR

certification from the State of Iowa Administrative Assistant Certificate Program will substitute for six months of the required experience;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of eighteen months of full time experience as a resident treatment worker or Clerk–Advanced.
