Responsibilities
The Art Therapy Clinical Coordinator shall develop, supervise, and manage the network of sites contracted by the University for practicum training of graduate art therapy students in the Art Therapy Program of the Department of Art Education. The coordinator will function as a liaison between internal (faculty and students) and external (agency directors and supervisors) aspects of the network. The coordinator shall sustain engagement with students to support practicum placements and maximize learning potential of practicum experiences.
This position is responsible for:
- Establish contractual agreements between FSU and the practicum agencies. Make placement decisions regarding students in service learning, first, second and third practicum experiences. Monitor and supervise students’ experiences at their sites, acting as a liaison between the University and the agencies.
- Continue developing the excellence and strength of the practicum network, working with existing contracts to improve the training, and establishing new sites as the health, educational, correctional and community systems evolve.
- Develop and facilitate meetings with field supervisors twice a semester. These involve administration, education, and trouble shooting.
- Participate in the department workings, attending faculty meetings, promotional efforts, and university functions.
- Meet with students to educate them about participation in the systems they operate within.
- Administer the extensive documentation process that is required for the practicum contracts, grading, case assignment, completion of additional training requirements, insurance forms etc.
- Maintain and update the Practicum Handbook used to support the integration of supervisors and students and to explain department policies, educational requirements, documentation as well as site and student evaluation processes.
- Develop and facilitate workshops for graduating students that help them prepare for licensure, job searches and employment preparation.
- Support the department practicum network with regular correspondence with and attendance at meetings among partnering agencies.
- Monitor and report on the workings of the American Art Therapy Association, the Florida Art Therapy Association, the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling, and related out of state associations for licensure and regulation information that pertains to students and training.
- Maintain online portal for supervisors that includes relevant and up to date resources on art therapy research, training, and practice.
- Manage and train students, faculty, and onsite supervisors on InPlace administrative duties appropriate for each including placements, logbooks, evaluations, and verification of practicum hours. Facilitate logbook reviews and provide feedback to practicum professors twice per semester. Responsible for maintaining communication with InPlace for troubleshooting.
- Hold regular gatherings with supervisors to gain feedback, maintain and establish partnerships, troubleshoot strategies, and provide ongoing updates on changes to programmatic requirements and expectations.
- Serve on the FSU Art Therapy Program Advisory Board
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
Qualifications
Registration and Board Certification with the American Art Therapy Association (ATR-BC) and a Masters or Doctoral degree required. Licensure (LMHC) Preferred.
Extensive familiarity with the delivery of mental health systems and social service agencies. Extensive familiarity with the theory and practice of art therapy principles and techniques. Understanding of the licensure process for art therapists in the State of Florida and close awareness of Masters level training requirements for art therapists. Fluency in mental health processes.
Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and other administrators at the University and effectively work with agency directors, supervisors, and administrators within the external network of practicum sites; conduct supervisor meetings and make effective presentations about the field, the university and the program at the practicum sites; establish appropriate office and recordkeeping procedures, and general administrative management. Demonstrate superior organizing, public speaking and writing abilities.
Most important are high level clinical skills. Additionally, required are administrative, communication, and negotiation skills. The position balances the needs of students, the department, and the agencies where the practicum sites are located. In a sense the Art Therapy Clinical Coordinator acts as the mediator and regulator of a highly intricate system.
Extensive experience working as an art therapist in different kinds of settings. Experience supervising students in practicum sites and experience in management and administration. Understanding of higher education and contract negotiation is also required.
Highly developed organizational and leadership skills.
Demonstrated computer competency (word processing and spread sheets).

The position requires mobility and the capacity to visit diverse sites around the local and regional areas of Tallahassee, including socio-economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.
This position requires comprehensive and extensive work sustained on a variety of levels. Frequent interaction with different dimensions of the systems, and use of sustained concentration, reasoning, judgment, resourcefulness, analytical ability, and ingenuity. This position is complex, requiring excellent negotiation skills, contractual understandings, and clinical competency. The mental health systems are in a constant state of change and turnover and require informed monitoring to maximize the educational experiences of our students. The most difficult part of this job is gaining the understanding, knowledge, and judgment necessary to make sound decisions about practicum sites. Additionally, the position requires the capacity to interact with authority and skill when engaging with clinical directors and administrators. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail are also essential for success in the position.
