Located in Baltimore’s cultural center near the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, UMMC Midtown Campus is a 180-bed, community teaching hospital with a focus on helping people manage chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, pulmonary conditions, and infectious diseases.
Main Function:
Processes and analyzes patient samples. Examines and interprets data quality and reports out results. Assures laboratory instruments are appropriately maintained. May assume the duties of the supervisor when the supervisor is not on site. Acts as an information resource to clients.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Processes patient specimens according to established protocols.
- Evaluates acceptability of specimen based on criteria for assays to be performed.
- Appropriately documents suboptimal or rejected specimens.
- Assays Laboratory specimens
- Prioritizes STAT and routine specimens effectively to reach established turnaround time goals.
- Performs assays according to established procedures.
- Performs repeat testing as required by laboratory protocols.
- Monitors pending list and/or specimen tracking screen to assure that all tests are performed on all specimens within the laboratory turn around time criteria.
- Reports Results
- Assures accuracy and plausibility of results before they are released.
- Calls and documents all critical results as defined and described in laboratory policy.
- For suboptimal specimens, attaches appropriate caution comment to the affected assay results.
- Performs and documents routine maintenance and function check procedures.
- Monitors status of all reagents
- Ensures that reagents are prepared and handled as described in departmental procedures.
- Calibrates as required by instructions for use and/or required for quality purposes.
- Validates new reagent lots as required in departmental policy.
- Monitors supply inventories
- Performs quality control procedures
- Runs quality control as described in departmental procedures.
- Evaluates results of controls for acceptability before reporting patient results.
- Follows established departmental procedures if control results are outside acceptable limits.
- Maintains competency
- Reviews procedure manuals as required in laboratory policy.
- Meets continuing education requirements defined in laboratory policy.
- Performs assays on proficiency testing surveys as assigned by the supervisor and in the manner described in laboratory policy.
- Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Is capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director;
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Follows safety and infection control policies for the department and the hospital. Completes annual safety training and competency testing. Uses safety equipment as appropriate.
- Other duties and projects as assigned, which may include but are not limited to:
- Working with vendor technical personnel to troubleshoot instrument or reagent problems.
- Training new employees.
- Performing competency assessment using direct observation.
- Assume role of Designated Supervisor.
- Write policies and procedures.
- Has earned a bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from an accredited institution.
- ASCP medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist certification required for full time staff, preferred for part time and PRN staff.
- PC literate, able to utilize word processing and basic computer programs.
- Previous work as a Medical Technologist in a hospital based clinical laboratory setting preferred.
