ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Maintains streets, parking lots, and related property, including, but not limited to, concrete repairs, crack sealing, and blacktop patching.
- Shovel dirt, gravel, and asphalt; cut brush; dig ditches; rake and spread gravel or paving material; clear drainage ditches and culverts of debris; operate loaders to load trucks with asphalt or gravel; pave and patch roadways; construct masonry or concrete catch basins and retaining walls and perform related concrete/masonry work;
- Helps creates a safe and efficient street system by placing or maintaining street signs, clearing debris, and other duties.
- Assists with construction projects such as storm sewer, street, parking lot, or other construction projects.
- Trims and/or removes trees or other landscaping within the right of way or at other public facilities.
- Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Operates a variety of construction or power equipment, such as mechanized broom, mowers, back-hoe, dump truck, snowplow, and end-loader, jackhammers, mowers, skid-steers and other small equipment and tools to maintain street and utility systems.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisors; cleans equipment.
- Assists with yard waste, brush, and leaf pickup program. Clears storm-related debris.
- Loads and unloads materials, tools, and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Performs with traffic control and flagging when working in high traffic areas of the city.
- Attend safety and training sessions.
- Assist with city events as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of grounds maintenance tools, equipment and methods.
- Knowledge of or the ability to learn the maintenance, and basic repair of small gasoline engines, lawn mowers, string trimmers, blowers, and pickup trucks.
- Ability to learn a good working knowledge of the overall operation of the City of Clinton Public Works Department, including familiarity with the location of all city streets, alleys, sidewalks, storm sewers, drainage systems, rights-of-way boundaries, and corporate city limits.
- Ability to work in all types of weather for a prolonged period of time.
- Ability to utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
- Ability to read and understand operation manuals and instructions.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to follow oral/written instructions and communicate effectively with the public.
- Ability to work outside in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to work on-call work, overtime, nights and weekends.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Minimum two (2) years experience performing manual labor with asphalt and cement, street maintenance or construction related work.
(A comparable amount of training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Tennessee driver’s license by date of hire.
- Possession of a Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus, but not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
(Occasional=1-3 Hrs; Frequent=3-5 Hrs; Constant=5-8 Hrs – Per Work Day)
Constant outdoor work in all climates, temperatures, and weather conditions. Constant standing and walking for extended periods of time. Occasionally sits. Constant use of hands to handle objects, reaching with hands and arms. Constantly stoops, kneels, crawls, climbs and balances. Frequent exposure to moderate to loud noise. Occasional lifting up to 100 pounds and in some cases, may be required to lift up to 100 pounds. Frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain and snow.
