The incumbent must be a highly motivated, creative professional responsible for the planning, development, delivery, and management of all aspects of the University of Miami Police Department’s (UMPD) Crime Prevention Program. The role is strongly linked to the UMPD mission. The individual reports directly to the Community Affairs Lieutenant, and must have the knowledge and skills to work independently as a representative of the entire department. The incumbent must collaborate with the whole University community, and build positive relationships. The role educates the community on crime prevention strategies and techniques. Incumbent works closely with the Office of Emergency Management, especially in training and new student orientation. The role regularly collaborates with Facilities Maintenance, Facilities Design and Construction, University Communications, Student Affairs, Housing, and Dean of Students (list is not exhaustive). The role also includes compliance activities for Title IX, Clery Act, VAWA, and others as requirements change. This position includes some intercampus travel and out of town travel. The Crime Prevention Officer position is open to both Civilian and Sworn Officer.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
- Manages and coordinates all crime prevention programs.
- Researches and develops new and innovative crime prevention programs.
- Researches and presents proposals to improve campus safety.
- Develops and conducts various public speaking assignments and interviews related to safety and crime prevention issues.
- Performs victim advocate duties, computer crime mapping system, crime analysis, and prepares and submits all crime reports mandated by the state and federal government.
- Assumes responsibility for Clery Act compliance.
- Researches and writes articles for publications, and oversees publication and dissemination of brochures, guides and promotional items.
- Maintains, troubleshoots and prepares new installation proposals for the Blue Light Telephone system.
- Recommends and oversees installation of safety and security devices.
- Conduct security surveys.
- Develops and maintains the Police Department website.
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS :
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent required,
College credits or College diploma preferred but not required.
Certification and Licensing:
Crime Prevention Certificates preferred but not required.
Experience:
Minimum 3 year of relevant experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated knowledge of planning, defining projects, time management, and securing resources.
- Full knowledge and understanding of campus geography.
- Understanding of local geography.
- Excellent knowledge of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED). Knowledge of contemporary Crime Prevention programs.
- Know contemporary Crime Prevention trends.
- Knowledge of Emergency Management practices.
- Know relevant Florida Statutes.
- Knowledge of cultural diversity and relation to role effectiveness.
- Knowledge of Federal, State and local resources for crime prevention and victim’s advocacy.
- Knowledge of Public Information practices.
- Knowledge of computer software for general office computing, publication preparation, and presentations.
- Knowledge of multimedia for communications.
- Knowledge of active shooter response and training.
- Knowledge of anti-terrorism trends. Knowledge of Homeland Security activities.
- Knowledge of Law Enforcement intelligence confidentiality. High degree of knowledge of the Clery Act, Title IX, VAWA, Campus Save Act, and related laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of creation and maintenance of crime watch programs.
- Knowledge of crime specific prevention techniques (e.g. theft, robbery, burglary, rape, etc.).
- Knowledge of the University’s web design platform.
