Custodian Job Description

Position Purpose:

The purpose of the custodian is to ensure that the church, school and property grounds are properly maintained and presentable to the public at all times.

Position Accountability:

• The custodian under the direction of the Administrative Pastor and the school Principal for the fulfillment of responsibilities assigned in the job description. The custodian will also work closely with the Board of Trustees to ensure repairs are made to the property and buildings as needed.
• Meet weekly with both the Administrative Pastor and the School Principal
• An annual written review will be completed by the Administrative Pastor, School Principal and at least one member of the Board of Trustees.

Salary and Benefits:

• This is a full-time salaried position, with compensation based on experience and skill levels.
• This position includes health insurance, disability and retirement (eligible to begin 30 days from the date of hire).
• The employee is eligible for ten days of paid time off annually, plus paid holidays (Good Friday, Easter Monday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day).

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Ensure that the church and school are cleaned and ready for students, members and guests as they arrive
• Take regular inventory of cleaning supplies and keep necessary items on hand
• Clean before and after any events
• Clean sidewalks during winter and keep school yard and church grounds clean all year
• Make sure regular maintenance is done on heating systems and fire systems
• Perform maintenance repairs to plumbing and electric equipment not requiring an outside contractor. Please note: we have contracted with PEAK Heating and Cooling for all our HVAC needs. All other areas, do minor repairs immediately, or contact the trustees for assistance.
• Report to the trustees any maintenance problems, performing minor repairs as able.
• Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the Board of Trustees, pastors or principal
• Reference task guide for detailed task list (weekly, monthly and summer)

• Flexible and willing to adapt to varying schedules each week, including working evenings and weekends
• Proactive, attending to messes and problems before they are brought up or requested

• Strong customer service skill and the ability to get along with others, and communicate effectively with staff and members
• Availability to clean church and school after events and on weekends
• Basic repair skills
• Familiar with custodial equipment (e.g. ladders, floor buffers, carpet cleaners, etc.).

Daily Tasks @ School:

Sweep/mop/vacuum floors (including rugs)

Clean bathrooms (wiping down toilets, sinks, countertops and mirrors and replacing supplies as needed—soap, paper towels, toilet paper)

Wipe down door handles to each classroom

Gathering trash cans from all classrooms and replace bags

Dry mop gym floor and clean bleachers (as needed)

Clean snow off walkways (as needed), and apply ice melt

Pick up around the school grounds and inspect grounds for problems

Check boilers for water

Clean and sanitize drinking fountains

Clean floors under lunch tables

Weekly Tasks @ School:

Dusting in classrooms and hallways

Cleaning glass on all entry doors

Take care of classroom repairs as notified by teachers

Replace light bulbs (as needed)

Check and replace all furnace filters (monthly)

Take out recycling (cans and paper)

Inspect boilers

Check with principal to see if there are requests or repairs/projects that need to be done

Recharge emergency lights (monthly)

Summer Tasks @ School:

Strip and wax all floors (classrooms and hallways), removing furniture as needed

Clean all window screens

Wash all windows inside and outside

Paint rooms as needed

Wash walls in classrooms, hallways and lunchroom

Wipe out lockers

Fix broken desks

Pull out bleachers, sweep and scrub under, WD-40 rollers

Replace furniture with correct number of student desks

Dust gym walls

Repair any loose tiles in the gym or around the school building

Clean, paint and/or fix boot racks

Check playground equipment

Clean floors as needed for events

Flush out water heaters for scale

Purchase all supplies

Please note that the Board of Education and the Board of Trustees will go through the school in the spring of the year and make a list of what needs to be fixed or repaired. This list will be talked over with the custodian and input requested.

Seasonal Tasks:

Close up and open up compressor on roof

Heat tapes on and off

Clean out/up janitorial closets

Shampoo carpets

Sweep, mop and vacuum all floors (sanctuary, steps, entry ways, foyer, offices, kitchen, Sunday School and classrooms)

Sweep basement fellowship floor and organize tables and chairs if necessary.

Clean bathrooms (wiping down toilets, sinks, countertops and mirrors and replacing supplies as needed—soap, paper towels, toilet paper)

Ensure that balcony is tidy

Clean out pews

Take out all garbage (offices, kitchen, classrooms, etc.)

Clean glass on entry doors

Check the church calendar for special church services or events

Set up and clean up for events such as weddings, funerals and other groups that might use the space (as requested)

Check with Administrative Pastor to see if there are requests or repairs/projects that need to be done

Clean snow off walkways (as needed), and apply ice melt

Pick up around the church property and inspect grounds for problems

Adjust thermostats as directed in preparation for meetings and other functions

Change interior and exterior light bulbs (as needed)

Monthly/Seasonal Tasks @ Church:

Dust all corners, entryways and window sills

Scrub bathroom tile

Wipe down pews

Recharge emergency lights

Order custodial supplies

Shampoo carpets

Pay: $19.00 - $22.00 per hour
