The Assistant Teacher is responsible for providing the appropriate support for the Lead Teacher in developing and implementing a stimulating program and curriculum that promotes the social, emotional, and physical development of each child enrolled in our program. The development of these activities within the program and/or curriculum must align with the New York State Early Learning Guidelines (ELG), the New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core (PKFCC), and/or the New York State Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Assist in the supervision of children to maintain the overall health, safety, and well-being of each child in care.
- Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers in order to coordinate instructional efforts.
- Maintains a well-organized, clean, sanitary, safe, and attractive classroom environment conducive to the optimal development of children. This includes cleaning surfaces, equipment, toys, and removing garbage.
- Serve and feed children approved or provided meals. Must be conscious of food allergies and restrictions.
- Change children’s diapers, toilet train, and/or assist each child with going to the bathroom as needed.
- Assist Lead Teacher in maintaining records on each child’s attendance, progress, and development for the purpose of planning and compliance with the ELG, PKFCC, or CCSS.
- Participate in staff meetings, center activities, and staff development.
- Assist Lead Teacher in reviewing the progress of each child and developing plans to promote each child’s progress.
- Update daily reports for children using online systems and/or paper records.
- Develop a positive relationship with each child and promote the development of self-esteem and self-discipline.
- Establish a positive professional relationship and open line of appropriate communication with each child’s family and share information about the child’s day at the center.
- Assist Lead Teacher in planning and implementing the daily program of activities based on principles of child development and in accordance with the class’ curriculum and State standards/goals.
- Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups in order to help them master assignments and reinforce learning concepts presented by Lead Teachers.
- Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
- Organize and label materials.
- Provide extra assistance to students with special needs.
- Update each child’s daily report using the center’s daily reporting system or logs.
- Complete incident reports to notify children’s families of incidents, injuries, or illnesses that occur at the center.
- Undergo ongoing training as assigned or approved by administration and/or the center Director.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pound children and objects.
- Provide fluent verbal and written appropriate communication to children and families.
- Must be able to walk, squat/kneel, sit on floor, see, hear, speak with children to ensure children’s health and safety.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $15.50 - $17.50 per hour
