Salary Range: $75,000-$85,000

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Climate School is committed to educating the next generation of climate leaders, conducting groundbreaking interdisciplinary research to address the climate crisis, and galvanizing this education and research for real-world impact. The Climate School Office of Development seeks an Assistant Director of Development Events and Strategic Projects to support the School’s programming to increase donor, alumni, and community engagement with the School.

The Assistant Director of Development Events and Strategic Projects works with the Climate School Development team to plan and implement strategic in-person and virtual events and programs that strengthen donor support, grow alumni and community engagement, and complement ongoing development efforts. These events include but are not limited to receptions, salons, dinners, virtual and in-person speaker series, and networking opportunities. The goal of the events is to cultivate relationships between alumni, prospects, and donors with Climate School leadership, faculty and development officers. The incumbent works closely with senior Development staff to help drive the direction and scope of event programming to support stewardship, fundraising, and alumni and community engagement goals.

The Assistant Director will coordinate the planning and execution of development events, arranging all event details: location/zoom registration and management, catering, invitations, vendor contracts and payments, briefing documents, event materials, and logistics. Working closely with Development leadership, the incumbent will organize faculty, alumni, and volunteers for programs.

The ideal candidate will have event planning and execution experience and the ability to develop innovative curated programming in collaboration with Development and School leadership.

Responsibilities

Climate School Development Event Project Management

Oversee event logistics, including the identification of venues and vendors and coordinate all event vendor contracts.

Prepare event communications and invitations and track RSVPs

Produce event briefing documents.

Collaborate with development leadership on programming and coordination with event speakers.

Oversee day-of event logistics.

Evaluate the results of events and propose improvements for upcoming events.

Community Relations and Alumni Engagement

Engage community around Lamont campus

Supports Lamont’s annual Open House focusing on community outreach.

Support alumni engagement for the Columbia Climate School, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

Collaborates with Sr. Dir of Development and Leadership Giving to coordinate the activities of the Lamont Alumni Association Board and alumni reunion activities at AGU.

Development Office Special Projects and Strategic Initiatives

Support the Office of Development’s work on new and emerging opportunities to secure support for the Climate School’s research, teaching, and impact work.

Performs other duties as deemed appropriate by the Executive Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and minimum of three years related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in higher education is a plus.

Other Requirements

Experience with event planning is required. Ability to work well in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment and to manage several projects at one time. Exceptional written communication and relationship-building skills are required. Must be professional, highly organized, creative, efficient, collaborative, and have a strong attention to detail. Able to work successfully both individually and as part of a team. Must be flexible and willing to take on new responsibilities within a growing program. Must also be flexible to travel between Columbia campuses as required. Some travel may be required. Some evening work required. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel required; knowledge of Advance, Salesforce or similar development databases preferred; experience with event management tools including Eventbrite, and/or similar systems is required.
