We are seeking a talented and passionate data science leader (Director or Associate Director level) to join our Neuroscience department at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) in Cambridge, MA, and help develop therapies for patients with debilitating neurodegenerative, neuromuscular, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental disorders.
In this key role you will lead the neuroscience data science team, collaborating closely with leaders, drug discovery project teams and data scientists across the organization, to drive the use of data and data science approaches to advance our ability to discover new targets leveraging human genetics, analyze high complexity DRUG-seq and scRNA-seq experiments in collaboration with our genomics team, identify biomarkers through analyzing a variety of types of ‘omics data, and develop robust phenotyping approaches using AI and machine learning.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Assoc Director:
- Develop and execute the neuroscience data science strategy within the context of a vibrant community of highly matrixed Novartis data scientists
- Provide career development opportunities and mentorship to a team of highly skilled data scientists in the neuroscience department that have a range of expertise
- Guide the team to deliver impactful results and actionable insights and to develop innovative approaches to address emerging scientific needs from the target and drug discovery teams
- Initiate and leverage internal and external collaborations to support neuroscience programs through computational biology approaches and data
- Influence the scientific strategy for neuroscience drug discovery and exploratory projects
- Set neuroscience data science team goals and priorities, working in collaboration with unit heads, project team leaders, and data science team members
- Contribute to accomplishing the data science team goals through “hands-on" analyses
- Director level: Contribute to a forward-looking patient, disease, and analytics strategy for Novartis, in collaboration with leaders from the data scientist community. May include identifying and driving strategic external partnerships
- Director level: Represent the neuroscience department in the NIBR-wide data science community and influence the broader data science strategy in collaboration with other divisional data science leaders

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be: Assoc Director: between $192,000 - $288,000/ year; Director: $212,000 - $318,000; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

- Demonstrated leadership and ability to mentor and develop the careers of computational biologists
- A PhD with at least 7 years (Associate Director) or 10 years (Director) of pharma or biotech industry experience in computational biology, including 2+ years managing a team
- Experience leading computational biology projects and coordinating the efforts and responsibilities across a highly matrixed, collaborative team
- A track record of impact on drug discovery programs through human genetics, ‘omics analysis, biomarker discovery, imaging analysis, and/or machine learning approaches
- Ability to communicate effectively with leaders across the organization to share the impact the team brings and to build cross-divisional collaborations to advance neuroscience programs
- Fluency in Python and/or R programming languages and knowledge of data management, data wrangling, machine learning, and data visualization
