JOB SUMMARY
: The Director of Communications position is responsible for developing effective messaging and communication strategies specific to organ, tissue and eye donation. The Director manages activities related to the development, promotion and evaluation of organ and tissue donation education and awareness to the general public within the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance (TOSA) service area. This position must have strong writing skills, communications abilities, and team-working qualities. This position may be required on occasions to travel by company or personal automobile or commercial aircraft to accomplish the job responsibilities. The incumbent will have access to confidential material and needs to use discretion with this information and strictly adheres to the TOSA confidentiality policy.


WORK SCHEDULE
: The Director of Communications position is a full-time position. Normal office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The employee may occasionally have to work evenings or weekends, as needed


KEY FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
:

  • Coordinates with area media (radio, television and newspaper) advisory groups, and serves as a liaison to other organ and tissue agencies and with educational institutions.
  • Reviews drafts and finalizes statements, press releases, media advisories, and other messaging (e.g. social media).
  • Creates and oversees the creation of promotional and informative materials the organization sends out to the public.
  • Creates and oversees relative, internal organizational communication.
  • Responsible for developing donor awareness campaigns focused upon increasing the community’s predisposition towards organ donation.
  • Serves as the liaison between Donate Life Texas and TOSA.
  • Positions TOSA as the primary authority and organizational leader with regard to organ donation in the service area.
  • Networks with the city, county and state government to position TOSA effectively and to take advantage of opportunities to work cooperatively with those agencies to promote organ donation and TOSA.
  • Monitors and disseminates developments in the field.
  • Participates on national and regional affiliated organization councils, task forces and committees as appropriate.
  • Develops community/public relations program for the TOSA service area and a means to evaluate such a program. Programs will include but will not be limited to:
    • Radio and television production and print media.
    • Establishment of speaker's bureaus.
    • Establishment of minority advisory groups.
    • Coordination of donor awareness activities with educational institutions and programs.
    • Coordination of donor awareness activities with various state agencies.
    • Coordination of exhibits for health fairs and other public events.
  • Responsible for TOSA activities for annual events such as National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week (NOTDAW).
  • Directs any fund raising campaigns that may be authorized for the purpose of organ donor awareness.
  • Responsible for ordering, storing and distribution of all donor awareness material such as brochures, donor cards, bumper stickers, etc.
  • Prepares annual report.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Bachelor's degree in public relations, or marketing; experience or background in health care preferred.

2. Minimum of 5 years experience in public relations or similar capacity.

3. Must be bilingual.

4. Marketing and analytical skills

5. Media management

6. Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills.

7. Prefer familiarity with the South and Central Texas area.

8. Physical requirements include ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
