Definition of Classification:
The Director of Development for Athletics (DODA) is responsible for cultivating and securing philanthropic support for University of Redlands Athletics. The DODA will develop a cohesive and comprehensive fundraising strategy, from annual giving to leadership and planned gifts, or Athletics priorities.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Leadership Gifts, this position will work closely with the Director of Annual Giving, the Executive Director of Leadership Gifts, the Director of Athletics, coaches, and other members of the University community to carry out these responsibilities.
This position requires flexible working hours, which may include working some evenings, weekends, as well as the ability to travel.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Works closely with the Associate Vice President for Advancement, Director of Annual Giving, Executive Director of Leadership Gifts, Vice President for Advancement, President, and Trustees to develop leadership gifts strategies to support Bulldog Athletics.
- Collaborates with the Director of Athletics to involve coaches in the identification of prospects, determination of needs within their respective programs, and partner with them to cultivate and solicit donors to support those funding priorities.
- Partners with and advise the Vice President for Advancement and the President on principal giving prospects, preparing briefing documents, and as assigned, accompanying the President on visits with key donors, trustees, and other constituents, as assigned.
- Builds and oversees a program to solicit annual gifts from alumni, parents, and friends in support of Bulldog Athletics.
- Develops and manages a portfolio of approximately 100 donors and prospects, focusing on identifying, cultivating, and soliciting gifts of $25,000+, with an emphasis on gifts of $100,000+.
- Partners with Prospect Research to continually prioritize a portfolio of potential donors for cultivation and solicitation, tracking their progress through the fundraising cycle.
- Conducts regular donor calls and visits throughout the year, traveling, as necessary.
- Attends games, meets, tournaments, and other athletic competitions as appropriate to foster enthusiasm and philanthropic support for Bulldogs Athletics.
- Grows the pipeline of donors for Athletics by regularly reaching out to potential donors to discern their interest in the University and qualify their capacity and inclination to make major and planned gifts.
- Collaborates with Donor Relations and appropriate faculty and administrators to create and implement personalized donor recognition and stewardship plans.
- Documents donor contacts and activities in a timely manner in the University’s donor database.
- Supervises, plans, directs, and assigns work of assigned staff; makes hiring and disciplinary decisions; provides feedback on performance and approve timesheets.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines

Experience/Training/Education:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Five years of direct and/or related work experience.
- A valid California Class C CA drivers’ license with a good driving record is required. Note: Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment. A valid California Class “C” driver’s license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).
Preferred
- Experience fundraising for college athletics.
- Experience working in Higher Education, external relations, constituent engagement or fundraising.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of fundraising.
- Effective relationship building, pipeline strategy and comfort securing major and planned gifts.
- Knowledge of state and federal legal issues related to higher education.
- Ability to articulate a clear vision for university athletics.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with an inspiring and persuasive ability.
- Effective organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities.

Working Conditions:
Standard office and field setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. This position requires flexible working hours, which may include working some evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
Physical Demands:
Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.
BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs. Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
