Position Overview:
The Director, Technical Design leads the Apparel Brand Technical Design Team (development through pre-production) at the division level. The Director is responsible for developing a peak performing team that delivers competitive fit and product construction. The Director is an integral contributor to the development and execution of department strategy for fit, sizing/grading, product construction and process effectiveness. The Director is a key point of contact for business partners at various levels within Design, Production, Merchandising, and Sourcing and with external Vendors. The Director represents the department in the product pipeline planning process and business initiatives. This position requires a high level of leadership and management skills including, strategic thinking, communication, problem solving, negotiating, people development, technical design and process management. This person should thrive in a fast-paced and multi-faceted environment.

Drives and evolves Technical Design strategy, operations, methods, measures of effectiveness to increase market competitiveness across fit, cost, and quality.

Leads, manages and develops Apparel teams.

Ensures execution of design and fit intent into bulk production while maintaining corporate standards.

Develops and maintains fit protocol and standards for brand.

Protects brand integrity through fit continuity.

Drives for continual improvement and innovation to enhance product quality, fit and process effectiveness.

Understands business drivers and performance.

Identifies trends and proactively engages business partners with recommendations for viable courses of action.

Leads and represents department in intra-department and cross-functional initiatives.

Manages fit model(s), agency relationships.

Builds strong relationships with Merchandising, Design, Product Development, Sourcing, Overseas Office Teams and external partners.

High level of complex technical problem solving.

Travel to Sourcing and Vendor Development offices and/or factories to work with technical teams to troubleshoot, educate, and understand factory capabilities.

Encourage team atmosphere across brands and categories; fosters open communication and team environment with all business partners; receives constructive feedback professionally.

Mentor and thought partner for team and business partners.

Holds self and others accountable for work commitments and outcomes.
Work Experience and Education Requirements:

Minimum AA or Certification in Apparel Manufacturing, Design, Patternmaking or 7-10 years Technical Design experience of increasing responsibility in women’s sportswear companies or manufacturers recognized as fashion industry leaders.

Minimum of 5 years experience in a management position.

Expertise in patternmaking including grading, construction, and fit for multiple and complex products.

Specialist in fit / knowledge of construction standards and manufacturing methods.

Fluent in product pipeline processes and cross-functional roles & responsibilities.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Strong leadership, influencing, and negotiating skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to interface effectively with senior/executive leadership.

Proven ability to build peak performing teams and lead teams through change.

Strong people assessment and development skills.

Critical thinking and strategic analysis/planning with a holistic approach.

Ability to proactively trouble shoot and problem solve in a fast-paced environment.

Computer skills (preferred programs: computer pattern programs, such as Illustrator, Gerber, Lectra, PDM, email system i.e. MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word).
