Position Summary
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, the Director of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DIB) provides management, strategic guidance, vision and leadership for multiple programs including pre-college transition programming, the Pride Center, and the DIB Center as well as any subsequent related units, initiatives, and grants. The Director will be responsible for developing and directing the implementation of strategic student outreach, academic support, and engagement initiatives to support student access and success, promote diversity and equity, and foster a supportive, inclusive environment. The individual in this role will assist in developing and advancing the mission and vision of the university by promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion while initiating, facilitating, and assessing community-building and academic success programs to support and guide low income, first generation and under-represented student populations at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF). The position supervises staff and student personnel, works directly with the Division of Student Success staff, Academic Affairs staff, university faculty, administrators, and community members to retain and graduate under-represented minority students, paying particular attention to closing the retention and graduation equity gaps at UWRF. Some nights and weekends are required.
Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership for the Diversity, Inclusion and Belong Unit (30%)
- Direct the development of long-range and short-term strategic plans and initiatives and align unit objectives to ensure the appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources and adherence to regulations and institutional policies.
- Serves as the unit liaison with internal and external stakeholders to advocate for access, inclusion, and student success within the University.
- Collaborate with staff in academic affairs, student affairs, faculty, campus leaders, community members, and partnering organizations, in collaboration with University Advancement, to support and provide programming designed to close equity gaps for students.
- Serve as coordinator for the Wisconsin Lawton Grant Scholarship program.
- Maintain budgetary oversight for DIB and assist with the administration of grants funding programming and student support coordinated by DIB.
- Exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees.
Lead advocacy and facilitate student outreach to support the development of an inclusive campus environment (40%)
- Develop diversity outreach and engagement programs to contribute to the enrichment of the university community.
- Collaborate with campus partners to identify, design, and implement resources, training modules, workshops, presentations, programs, and services that create and foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment for living, learning, and working at the University.
- Work with campus professionals to resolve student concerns within areas of responsibility involving confidential student academic records.
- Serve as institutional advocate for low-income first-generation student success, retention, and graduation programs, providing expertise on current and emerging trends and/or technologies related to these areas.
- Lead and oversee the planning and execution of advising, academic events, and programs. Including advising Identity-Based Student Organizations (i.e. Black Student Union (BSU), Asian American Student Association (AASA), Latinx Student Organization (LSO), etc.).
- Develop and maintain an annual calendar for DIB events, important dates, and interventions.
- Create and oversee a communication plan to keep students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community stakeholders up-to-date on DIB news.
Evaluate and implement best practices by leveraging data and ongoing assessment (25%)
- Monitor national trends in promoting the success of diverse students and help educate the campus on the changing needs related to various personal identities.
- Evaluate and implement best practices in recruitment, retention, and engagement of marginalized, underrepresented, and targeted minority student populations, leveraging data, assessment, and technology to drive outcomes.
- Develop and implement DIB assessment programs, including supporting staff in developing assessment metrics and measures, collecting and reviewing assessment results, and using assessment results in a process of continuous improvement of student success.
Participate in other duties as assigned (5%)
- Serve on various university-wide committee as appropriate.
- Identify and engage in professional development opportunities.
- Engage in other projects and initiatives as requested.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Minimum:
- Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field.
- 5 years of experience in student services in a higher education setting.
- 2 years of experience leading and/or supervising.
- Demonstrated experience in building and advancing student-centered diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively and problem-solving with multiple stakeholders including but not limited to students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
- Demonstrated experience in implementing, managing, and completing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Preferred:
- Experience in the development of diversity plans and reports.
- Certification and/or training in areas of /Intercultural Awareness/Diversity.
- Bilingual
