IT System Administration - Journey

The Department of Social and Health Services’ (DSHS) mission is to transform lives through providing shelter, care, protection and/or support to our state’s most vulnerable population.

This position reports directly to the IT Architecture Manager of TIA/ALTSA/DDA within DSHS, as a key member involved in the IT management strategic decision-making/participation. This journey-level position is responsible for the helpdesk staff, triage service disruption, troubleshooting mission-critical applications, networking, on-premises server, and cloud technical environments. The position is responsible to ensure three DSHS Administrations, ALTSA, DDA, and TIA meet the needs of Washington State citizens with Physical and/or Developmental Disabilities (more than 100,000 citizens annually), in addition to providing approximately 6,000 ALTSA and DDA staff the necessary direct critical services to citizens.

Due to the nature of this position, this is an onsite role, and the individual hired for this role must live in or relocate within commuting distance to Olympia, WA.

Some of what you’ll do


  • Supervise first-line helpdesk customer support
  • Check server availability, functionality, integrity, and efficiency
  • Conduct functional and connectivity testing for wired and wireless network to ensure continuing. operability using diagnostic tools including Cisco Prime Infrastructure, SolarWinds NetFlow Network Analyzer, and cable testing devices
  • Maintain baseline system security according to organizational policies
  • Resolve hardware/software interface and interoperability problems
  • Oversee and manage Group Policy for end users and workstations meet DSHS security requirements
  • Install, update, and troubleshoot virtual and remote access servers and virtual desktops.•Oversee the Microsoft Active Directory Permissions that ensure confidentiality through passwords and group assignments
  • Oversee security access and ensure availability and integrity of mission critical agency applications such as Comprehensive Assessment and Reporting Evaluation (CARE), Application Security Access Portal (ASAP), Tracking Incidents of Vulnerable Adults (TIVA), and the Entry Access Security Exit (EASE)
  • Oversee, control, and improve the procurement of IT equipment, services, and support for ALTSA-DDA statewide as well as for our AAA partners who are in the state network
  • Oversee and handle Microsoft true-up licensing for ALTSA-DDA statewide as well as for our AAA partners who are in the state network
  • Oversee, control, and improve the inventory process of IT equipment at ALTSA-DDA HQ and the SDC and ensure all equipment with state tag# are accounted for.

Who should apply?

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or closely related field and 4 years of IT experience performing position-specific duties related to designing, managing, operating, and maintaining enterprise servers, workstations, storage, data center, networking, scripting, and automation.
    OR
  • An Associate’s degree in Information Technology or closely related field and 6 years performing position-specific duties related to designing, managing, operating, and maintaining enterprise servers, workstations, storage, data center, networking, scripting, and automation.
    OR
  • Eight years of IT experience at a comparable Journey level recognized by the State of WA. Experience for consideration such as consulting, analyzing, and system administration.

  • Working knowledge with PC/laptop hardware, printers, software, and peripherals
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office products
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well with IT and non-IT users on difficult IT issues
