Land Stewardship, Inc. has openings for Level 1 (entry level) and Level 2 (experienced) Ecological Restoration Crew Members (ERT) for the 2023 field season. This is an excellent early-career opportunity for those interested in exploring the fields of ecological restoration, invasive species management, and land stewardship in a friendly, encouraging, and experiential way. We are seeking conservation-minded warriors for work on many of New England’s most important conservation initiatives concerned with native biodiversity and threatened natural landscapes in need of care and protection. We have over 20 years of experience in this field and embrace our obligation to share it with the next generation of practitioners!

Level 1 Qualifications: No experience necessary, just a strong desire to actively engage with the land to promote native biodiversity. Applicants should be physically fit and be motivated. Education background including an Associates or Bachelor’s degree in a natural resources field is required.

Level 2 Qualifications: Preference will be given to those who have 1-2 years of work experience in ecological restoration, landscaping, farming, horticulture, arboriculture, forestry and/or logging. Applicant should be familiar with core equipment such as chain saw, brush saw, string trimmer and backpack sprayer. Education background including an Associates or Bachelor’s degree in a natural resources field is required.

The ERT will work primarily on ecological restoration/invasive plant management projects at sites in MA, VT, NH, RI & CT. Our services/activities include planting/seeding native species, invasive plant management, brush/vegetation removal, mowing, chainsaw work, and streambank stabilization. The ERT will be responsible for implementing targeted manual, mechanical and chemical applications. The ERT position involves the use of sensitive-area herbicides along with strenuous physical labor under a variety of challenging conditions.

Terms of Employment

Position will begin in April 2023 and end in the Fall of 2023 (November/December). We may also accommodate a college student schedule. Typical work day begins at 7 am. Occasional overnight travel may be required. Position requires a 40-hour/week commitment on average (4 days/week).

Further Description & Compensation

The ERT 1 position is our entry level crew position and includes our core training in ecological restoration techniques and context, invasive plant identification and management, wetland identification, and chainsaw training. In addition, the ERT 1 will take the first two courses in the Invasive Plant Certification Program offered through UMASS Extension (https://ag.umass.edu/landscape/education/invasive-plant-certification-program).

The ERT 1 pay scale is $15/hr.- $16/hr. depending on experience.

Benefits: paid federal holidays, gear allowance, core knowledge/skills training, mileage reimbursement, performance bonuses and Society for Ecological Restoration membership.

The ERT 2 position expects the applicant to have the knowledge, skills and experience of ERT 1 and takes it to the next level with increased responsibility through engaging as a crew leader, collecting land management data (gps/photos) and other special projects based on individual interests and career aspirations. Specialized training topics include wetland delineation, native plant identification, advanced invasive plant identification and advanced chainsaw training. Additionally, the ERT 2 will take the next two courses in the Invasive Plant Certification Program offered through UMASS Extension.

The Level 2 ERT pay scale is $17/hr.- $18/hr.

Benefits: Same as Level 1, one-week paid vacation, and includes additional training and opportunities for career development through our mentor program.
