As Employee Health & Safety Manager you will manage employee health risks, compliance gaps, and work with staff to guide them on responsibilities.
This role requires an on-site presence.

Job Purpose and Key Responsibilities:
Personally, act as EH&S lead for R&D non-hub sites specifically for the Cambridge, Massachusetts’s, and Branford, Connecticut locations and other remote satellite sites
- Provide leadership, strategic direction, coordinate and deliver EHS services and programmes in all areas of EH&S to R&D non-hub sites Partner with site leadership who have accountability for site EHS performance to ensure EHS risks are known, assessed and well managed.
- Ensure that senior R&D managers are fully appraised of their responsibilities in risk management and pro-actively support the EHS objectives of R&D.
- Provide day to day support as part of a team to deliver first line advice on training, emergency response, risk assessment, incident investigation, input to local projects and processes to the site(s)
- Work effectively with the EHS professionals on the Pharma R&D team to deliver efficient and consistent programs to all groups within R&D.
- Ensure the interests of R&D are represented and protected, both within and external to GSK.
- Maintain comprehensive external and cross business awareness and lead and participate in significant cross company initiatives.
- Provide specialist technical services (PTW, Machine Safety, Risk Assessment, etc…) to the R&D groups within the region.
- Provide Independent Business Monitoring Program leadership and support to R&D across the region and in conjunction with the broader R&D EHS team.
Accountability:
- Accountable for alerting management to legislative development in the areas Health, Safety and Industrial Hygiene which could impact operations
- Champion EH&S throughout the US by ensuring senior management understanding, commitment and accountability
- Ensure that the EH&S programs deliver value to the business via increased workplace safety, reduced environmental impact, increased regulatory compliance and reduction of direct and indirect costs.
- Provide technical EH&S support to the business.
- Represent the interests of GSK in key external policy forums.
- Champion the interests of stakeholders within the business in GSK EHS policy and strategy development
Complexity:
- Shaping change in the external environment is a key job factor. Ability to manage complexity and uncertainty in rapidly changing situations is required. Autonomous decision making is often essential.
- The breadth and number of activities directed by this position necessitates strong prioritization skills and the ability to manage tasks concurrently. Many of these tasks are initiated by the job holder; others come from internal customers and other stakeholders external to GSK. Deadlines are negotiable, but the job holder is required to make independent decisions as necessary.
- Influencing and negotiation required to ensure appropriate resourcing and commitment from other divisional managers.
- Position interfaces on a regular basis with all GSK business sectors.

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Environmental, Health and Safety Management or relevant science or engineering degree
- 10+ years of experience in managing Environmental, Health and Safety Programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Expertise in the OSHA Regulations on Hazardous Materials and Toxic & Hazardous Substances
- CSP Preferred
- Strong leadership abilities to influence senior GSK managers and staff in a demanding and rapidly evolving legislative environment.
- Good interpersonal, presentational and persuasive skills so as to successfully interact with managers at all levels and the ability to manage complex internal relations on a multi-site and international basis.
- Good knowledge of the business and a good networker.
