New Mexico State University Department of Astronomy is seeking an Electronics Tech, Sr. for the ARC 3.5m Telescope at Apache Point Observatory (APO) in Sunspot, New Mexico. APO is located in the Lincoln National Forest 16 miles from the village of Cloudcroft, NM. The observatory sits on a ridge overlooking White Sands National Park, White Sands Missile Test Range and Alamogordo, NM. with great seeing, dark skies, wide field optical/infrared imaging and spectroscopy. Working at APO, employees have the opportunity to lead/participate in research on the telescopes, tuition waivers to take classes at NMSU, or attend/present at conferences for professional development.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Enable astronomical research by building, repairing and maintaining telescope systems instruments. Maintenance and upgrade of instruments: Telescope hardware problem solving. Design of upgraded science instrument control programming. Design Schematics of electronic systems Implementing upgraded documentations.
Classification Summary
Lays out, builds, tests, troubleshoots, repairs, designs, and modifies developmental and production electronic components, parts, equipment, and systems such as computer equipment, electron tubes, test equipment, machine tool numerical controls, and specialized systems and/or equipment. Applies principles and theories of electronics and electrical circuitry, engineering mathematics, electronic and electrical testing, and physics. assists students, engineers, and/or faculty in design and preparation of lab experiments.
Classification Standard Duties
May coordinate the functions of an engineering laboratory;Discusses layout and assembly procedures and problems with engineers, researchers, or other professionals; draws sketches to clarify design details and functional criteria of electronic units. Assembles experimental circuitry or complete prototype models according to engineering instructions, technical manuals, and knowledge of electronic systems and components. Recommends changes in circuitry or installation specifications to simplify assembly and maintenance. Sets up standard or complex test apparatus or devises test equipment and circuitry to conduct functional, operational, environmental, and life tests to evaluate performance and reliability of prototype or production models. Performs routine hardware and software maintenance and assists in proper upkeep and utilization of systems. Analyzes and interprets test data. Adjusts, calibrates, aligns, and modifies circuitry and components and records effects on unit performance. Maintains technical documentation; writes technical reports and develops charts, graphs, and schematics to describe and illustrate system’s operating characteristics, malfunctions, deviations from design specifications, and functional limitations for consideration by engineers in broader determinations affecting system design and laboratory procedures. May operate bench lathes, drills, or other machine tools to fabricate parts, such as coils, terminal boards, and chassis. May check functioning of newly installed equipment to evaluate system performance under actual operating conditions. Supervises lab experiments; Oversees the supervision of technical personnel to include; work allocation, training, promotion and enforcement of internal procedures and controls and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance. May maintain inventory of electronic components, parts and supplies; Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge
Knowledge of electronic layouts, components and circuitry assembly procedures. Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures.

Records maintenance skills.

Ability to prepare field drawings of design proposals. Ability to perform preventive maintenance on computer hardware and software. Ability to write reports containing technical information. Ability to read and follow technical instructions and manuals. Ability to evaluate circuitry systems and design specification modifications. Ability to configure and/or design electronic test equipment and circuitry. Ability to communicate with and understand the requirements of professional staff in area of specialty. Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions. Ability to make adjustments and modifications to electronic circuitry and components. Ability to analyze operational data and develop graphic and/or written interpretations.
Required Education
Vocational/Technical certificate or an associate’s degree.
Required Experience
Five (5) years of experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined.
