You must be currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for Employees’ Retirement System Examiner 1 or Trainee, eligible under the 55 b/c program (see below), or eligible to transfer to this title under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

70.1 Transfer:
For a 70.1 transfer to a Employees Retirement System Examiner 1, SG-09, you must have one year of permanent competitive service in an approved 70.1 title allocated to a salary grade 07 or above.

70.1 Transfer to a trainee :
For a 70.1 transfer to the Employees Retirement System Examiner Trainee, SG-06, you must have one year of permanent competitive service in an approved 70.1 title allocated to a salary grade 04 or above.

Appointments via transfer must not result in a second, consecutive transfer with an advancement of more than two S-grades or one M-grade.

Depending on qualifications, you may be required to serve a 1year traineeship that leads to the full level grade 9 position.

55-b/c program:
This position may be designated 55 b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility.

For 55 b/c appointment, you must:
  • Possess the minimum qualifications for the selected title as established by the Department of Civil Service and listed on the most recent exam announcement.
  • Meet the applicable minimal mental and/or physical requirements for the job (with a reasonable accommodation, if necessary)
  • Have a current Eligibility Letter from the NYS Department of Civil Service, www.cs.ny.gov/rp55/, and be able to provide it to the Human Resources Office upon request.
Duties Description
Receives, reviews, and processes Death Cases opened by the automated Pension Benefit Information (PBI) Interface Process as well as Benefit Information Services Bureau (BIS).
  • Initiates the Suspension/Termination process with information obtained from various sources; BIS, PBI, emails, Chase Credit Returns.
  • Reviews and researches report to confirm death by utilizing internet searches of obituaries and or Accurint Database if necessary.

Initiates Reclamation Process.
  • Researches and determines if a Mebel generated payment must be reclaimed and enters required information to a shared Team Room Spreadsheet for Accounting action
  • Changes the cases status from New to Open on any system generated Peoplesoft Reclaim case.

Rejects Incomplete or Unacceptable Documentation.
  • All death related documents are closely analyzed for acceptance including Certified Copies, Missing information, incorrect information that does not match our records, Unacceptable documents are rejected through the case.

  • Ability to read, understand and interpret regulations, procedural manuals, and other documents used in routine office processing.

  • Must skilled in arithmetic reasoning and able to perform high level complex calculation.
  • Ability to understand and use common office record keeping and filing systems and processes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
