Story:

Duet is a non-profit based in Boston that partners with Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) to help working adults from across Eastern New England earn college degrees quickly and affordably. Duet has helped students earn more than 500 associate and bachelor’s degrees from SNHU to date. With a proven model, Duet is now investing in building out its team that will recruit, enroll, and coach more students.

We organize our work around coaching students to fast and affordable completion of associate and bachelor’s degrees and coaching students towards good paying career-track employment opportunities. The Program Development Group’s workflow crosses both buckets of work but primarily focuses on supporting the day-to-day operations of Academic and Enrollment coaching. What we mean by Coaching at Duet:

Our students are smart and hard-working and care deeply about graduating from college. Yet, almost all of our students have come to us having tried college once or twice or even three times in the past without ever earning a degree. We believe this is because the design and cost of most colleges do not work for people who have jobs and/or families they need to take care of. We partnered with SNHU because they have developed a new way of earning a college degree that breaks down many of the typical barriers (namely, cost and scheduling) associated with traditional college.

So, what is the purpose of Duet’s coaching? Well, nobody flinches when the most successful people hire coaches to get better. Senior executives at big companies hire coaches. Teachers have coaches. Even Tom Brady hires a personal trainer. Successful people rely on experts to push them, give them feedback, and be in their corner and help them keep their eye on the prize (especially when the prize is far away!). This is what Duet’s coaching, when done well, accomplishes for students. Senior academic coaches help their students navigate tough academic or technical challenges, remind them why they are doing this hard work in the first place, keep them on track, and push them to get more done than they otherwise would have on their own – just like when Tom Brady’s trainer gets him to do that extra push up.
