Laboratory Assistant

Advanced Environmental Laboratories, Inc. (AEL) is looking to fill a position for an Environmental Laboratory Assistant. This is a part-time position for the initial 6 months with a strong possibility of a full-time hire at the end of the term.

This position supports our growing Florida Laboratory Network. AEL Laboratories business hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., with operational hours to from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. - Monday through Friday. Some weekends and holidays might be required in peak production times.

Summary:
This position is based at our AEL laboratory in Miramar, FL. The position will include laboratory work and some general maintenance such as helping the faiclity in order and clean (disposing of boxes, lab material, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Experience: Bachelor or associate degree, or equivalent in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, or closely related field. Experience in related work is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Students in any science field welcome to apply. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support all laboratory sample-related activities, including preservation, preparation, processing, and disposal
  • Maintain waste stream and disposal room
  • Participate in training on fundamental lab support policies, programs, and practices
  • Receives, maintains and stocks supplies, tools, and related items.
  • Cleans laboratory glassware according to GLP methods; picks up, transports and delivers glassware to required location(s) keeping wash and storage area clean and organized.
  • Assists with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receives guidance and direction or escalates when required.
  • May pick up, transports and deliver samples, documents, materials and other items as needed.
  • Assists with reviewing, completing and processing documents, databases, and related materials and information for sample pick up, transport and delivery.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the department's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Promotes and supports the overall mission of AEL by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with customers and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  • Loading and unloading shipping receipts
  • Storing supplies appropriately
  • Rotating samples from cold storage to disposal
  • Dumping samples in disposal
  • Unpacking Bluestreak shipments on Saturdays
  • Sweeping the lab
  • Taking out garbage
  • Ordering gas cylinders
  • Orientation and familiarity with laboratory procedures for QA/QC, Health and Safety, Hazardous Waste and general company policies.
  • Review AEL SOPs for analyses assigned.
  • Familiarize with instrumentation applicable to assigned analyses
  • Assist Sample Receiving with daily Bluestreak samples and kit preparation.
  • Conduct IDOCs: Initial Demonstration of Capability (required for each individual analysis).
  • Conducts analyses under direct supervision of trainer or until evaluation by QA officer and trainer/lab manager allows for unsupervised performance on select analyses.
  • Work with QA/QC officer on disposal of water and soil samples.

Basic Technical Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Ability to: Plan and coordinate work; track and plan preventative maintenance work;
  • Ability to organize, multi-task and adapt to changes
  • Ability to stand, or sit for up to 4 hours while working
  • Ability of lifting up to 50 lbs. required
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with co-workers and managers
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
  • Ability to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out instructions provided by supervisors

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Work is performed mostly indoors but outdoors at times, with exposure to various weather conditions. Position involves bending, standing, kneeling, climbing ladders, reaching below and above shoulders, and lifting objects weighing up to 50 lbs. While performing job duties. Wrist, hand and finger dexterity is required to operate various equipment and materials.
