Environmental Services Supervisor Job at Fairfax County Government
Fairfax County's Wastewater Collection Division (WCD) is recruiting for an Environmental Services Supervisor to lead and support crews in a robust operation and maintenance program responsible for the cleaning maintenance of nearly 3,400 miles of pipe associated to the County’s sanitary sewer infrastructure. This position resides in the Gravity Sewers Branch (GSB), Under the general supervision of the Sewer Maintenance Group (SMG) Business Operations Manager. Some of the primary functions of the position are listed the following below:
- Oversee preventive and scheduled maintenance operation of the gravity sewer system to prevent backups and overflows.
- Ensure work performed is captured in WCD’s maintenance work order system.
- QA/QC work performed, and data collected as a result of this operation.
- Develop and conduct training for staff and supervisors.
- Track and analyze data related to the operation for optimization and improvements.
- Provide leadership and guidance to staff within organization.
- Champion regulatory compliance with local, state and federal requirements of the County’s sanitary sewer system.
- Acts as a snow team captain during snow removal events.

Note: WCD is responsible for providing uninterrupted sanitary sewer services to residents twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred sixty-five days a year (24/7/365). The appointee to this position will be designated emergency essential personnel and will be required to occasionally work scheduled/unscheduled overtime, during holidays, and during inclement weather events to fulfill emergency service duties.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree in environmental sciences, engineering, construction management, or a related field; plus two years of experience in an environmental, engineering or construction management program.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSE REQUIRED:
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- General understanding of sanitary sewer operation.
- Strong leadership and operations management skills.
- Proficient receptive and productive skills.
- Working knowledge of field safety for operation staff.
- Knowledge of working with a computerized asset management system.
- Experience with Microsoft Office suits.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures. Ability to walk, negotiate or traverse property sites that may be undergoing construction or having terrain that is not level. Good physical health including good hearing, sight and speaking abilities. Must be capable of passing a pre-employment physical. Must be capable of pushing, pulling, lifting (a minimum of 90 pounds), walking, digging, climbing, bending or crouching. May enter confined spaces w/weight restriction of 310 pounds. Ability to work diverse and extreme environments including all weather conditions, extreme heat, extreme cold and small and confined spaces. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
