What you will do…
- Operates heavy motorized equipment to complete variety of construction & maintenance functions
- Performs wildfire support (e.g., Forest fire line construction, trails, culverts, roads & bridges)
- Performs general maintenance & repairs on equipment & buildings/ground maintenance
- Assist with wildfire suppression (e.g., wildfire & prescribe fire support)

You will be required to take a physical abilities test, administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities related to the safe operation of heavy motorized equipment.
Official position description:
Operates heavy motorized equipment (e.g., excavators, 8-12 ton dozers, standard backhoe, over 23,000 lb grader, 8–10 ton roller, 25,000 to 35,000 pound dump truck, truck mounted knuckleboom, front end loader, skid steer, tractor trailers &/or tandem axle trucks {i.e., gross weight over 45,000 pounds}) to complete variety of construction & maintenance functions: operates bulldozer for forest fire line construction, trails, culverts, road bridges & ground maintenance, recreational areas & facilities, logging & merchandising operations; operates smaller equipment (e.g., trucks, tractors, trailers, snowplows, forklifts, all-purpose vehicles (APV’s), mowers, stump grinder, chipper & chainsaw) for maintenance & construction projects; performs wildfire support as directed within training & physical capabilities; operates any & all equipment operated by lower-level equipment operators as needed; assist with sawmill & logging operations (e.g., timber, cutting, logging, trimming, edging & forest management, green chain, grading lumber, running sawmill equipment & moving logs).
Performs general repairs, improvements & maintains equipment (e.g., highway & non-highway vehicles, buildings & grounds, greases & oils machinery, performs routine maintenance {e.g., fluid & filter changes, hoses & belts} and other routine maintenance); implements fabrication; welds parts as needed; checks tires & lights; maintains accurate & concise maintenance records.
Performs general labor, maintenance, & other related functions (e.g., buildings, trail [horse, hiking & APV], service roads & grounds maintenance); performs basic electrical, structural, & carpentry; performs various forestry operation duties (e.g., mows & trims grass; cuts brush; sprays pesticides, herbicides; timber stand improvement projects & property boundary maintenance); operates chainsaw for felling, bucking & limbing of trees; operates prentice loader for loading log truck; operates dozer (e.g., 8-12 ton) to skid trees out of woods to loading area; purchases supplies (e.g., maintenance, grounds maintenance, equipment repairs); uses personal computer (e.g., enters activity report, fills out credit card forms, enters maintenance records).
Assists with wildfire suppression; performs wildfire & prescribed fire support as directed within training & physical capability; works with hand tools and dozer in construction of fire line & performs mop-up duties in conformance with standards taught in Basic Firefighter/Introduction to Fire Behavior (S-130/S-190) Course.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT: For positions in Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry Wildfire Program only, must successfully complete Basic Firefighter Introduction to Fire Behavior Course (S-130/S-190) within first year of employment.

Knowledge of: safety practices associated with operation of light & heavy motorized equipment; arithmetic to include fractions, decimals & percentages. Skill in: operation of heavy motorized equipment (e.g., dozer, grader, dump truck, low-boy, tractor trailer); lighter equipment such as forklifts, pickup trucks, wrecker snow plow; sawmill equipment; chainsaws & hand tools. Ability to: carry out oral & written instructions; complete routine forms & reports; recognize unusual or threatening safety conditions & take appropriate action; lift 100 pounds; demonstrate physical fitness.
