Assist with the coordination of the district’s Bilingual/English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Serve as an instructional leader in developing and improving instructional programs that support the needs of English learners.
- Utilize studies and research to encourage innovative instructional programs to improve the academic achievement of Bilingual and ESL students.
- Evaluate student progress regularly and systematically and use the findings to make programs more equitable and effective.
- Facilitate the appropriate use of technology to support Bilingual and ESL students.
- Assist in developing a comprehensive staff development program to improve the instructional strategies for Bilingual and ESL students.
- Provide implementation leadership in the District’s Bilingual and ESL program models.
- Assist in developing a comprehensive second-language acquisition curriculum and corresponding instructional strategies.
- Provide leadership in all aspects of the Bilingual/ESL program.
- Works as a collaborative member of the Curriculum, Instruction, and Staff Development Department.
- Consult positively and effectively with principals, teachers, assistant principals, team leaders, department chairs, and parents.
- Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution.
- Participate in the district-level decision process to establish and review the District’s goals and objectives and departmental plans.
- Actively support the efforts of principals, teachers, staff and students to achieve district goals and objectives and the campus improvement plan.
- Secure consultants, specialists, and other community resources for campus and district staff and curriculum development.
- Provide effective in-service activities using the District’s Bilingual program model, District goals, program evaluations, and teacher and administrator input.
- Monitor curriculum office staff to ensure smooth and efficient communication with campuses and other central office staff.
- Upon request, assist principals regarding personnel.
- Provide instructional support to all new Bilingual and ESL teaching staff.
- Provide staff development opportunities to ensure the effectiveness of identifying Emergent Bilingual (EB) students and instructional programs for Bilingual and ESL students.
- Assist with T-TESS upon request.
- Implement the policies established by Federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and the local Board policy in supervised areas.
- Recommend space, equipment, instructional materials, and facilities necessary to implement approved programs.
- Supervise the organization, distribution, and maintenance of instructional materials and equipment as appropriate.
- Provide appropriate reports and current information on all aspects of the Bilingual/ESL programs.
- Ensure student expectations for Bilingual and ESL students are effective in furthering the teaching/learning process and environment.
- Support District and campus procedures that enhance healthy self-esteem and ensure age-appropriate student expectations and management procedures.
- Monitor professional research, disseminate ideas and information to other professionals, and provide leadership in identifying trends and opportunities and solving problems facing the profession.
- Observe professional and ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the Texas Education Agency Code of Ethics.
- Communicate the District’s mission and goals in the area of Bilingual and ESL education to the community.
- Solicit community and parent involvement.
- Regular attendance.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Three years of classroom teaching experience in an ESL setting
Three years experience in leadership roles
Education/Certification:
- Master’s degree in Education
- Texas Valid teaching certificate
- Instructional Leadership Training (ILT) or Advancing Educational Leadership (AEL)
- District approved teacher appraisal system
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction at the Pre-K – 12
- Working knowledge of the student identification, placement, modification, exiting, and monitoring process of the Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC)
- Ability to develop an academically successful program for Bilingual and ESL students
- Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of the Pre-K – 12 Bilingual and English as a Second Language Program
- Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise and evaluate office staff and District instructional coaches
