GVCA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION:

Genesee Valley Council on the Arts is a nonprofit organization that has worked to promote arts and culture in the Genesee Valley region of western New York for over 50 years. As the regional arts council for Livingston and Monroe Counties, GVCA administers regrants on behalf of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), and offers year-round programming designed to support artists and to advance the arts in our local communities. The organization, which consists of an Executive director, a small staff, and a Board of Directors, is housed in a building generously provided by Livingston County at Murray Hill in the village of Mount Morris and in a satellite office in downtown Rochester. The Mt. Morris Office includes the New Deal Gallery, which houses a permanent collection of Works Progress Administration art from the 1930s. GVCA also provides support for Creative Artists Migrant Program Services (CAMPS), which offers free art workshops to migrant farmworkers and their families, and GLOW Traditions, which is a program that supports our area’s living cultural heritage through documentation and public programming of traditional arts.

The main responsibilities of the Executive Director are:

I. The Executive Director manages GVCA’s daily activities and supervises the staff in accordance with GVCA's personnel policies. It is the responsibility of the Executive Director to maintain, expand and execute all programs of the organization. The ED will:

  • meet regularly with the staff to plan, execute, and assess current and future programs
  • Manage staff including schedules for Monroe and Livingston locations and annual performance evaluations
  • act as the liaison between the organization and the bookkeeper
  • write grants and fundraising letters on behalf of the organization
  • keep records of all financial transactions

II. The Executive Director shares with the board and staff the responsibility of representing GVCA to the community and the larger nonprofit profession. It is the responsibility of the ED to:

  • communicate with the New York State Council on the Arts, GVCA’s primary funder, on matters related to funded programs and general operations
  • communicate with appropriate officials and employees of Livingston County on matters relating to the facility and annual monetary allocation as well as serve on county committees
  • develop and maintain partnerships with SUNY Geneseo, neighboring arts councils, the Chamber of Commerce, Letchworth State Park, and other organizations to promote culture
  • be an ambassador to the community and educate about GVCA and its programs

III. The Executive Director answers directly to the Board of Directors and works with them to:

  • formulate both long- and short-term goals of the arts council
  • create an annual budget with the assistance of the finance committee
  • plan and execute successful fundraisers, including the annual member gala, the Fare and Ware Festival, and Artful Holidays, and create program budgets with the program committee

IV. The Executive Director with support from staff manages gallery spaces in Livingston County and an office in Monroe County. It is the Executive Director’s responsibility to:

  • work with the General Services Administration within the Federal Government to continue stewardship of our WPA collection
  • encourage and schedule new artists to exhibit at GVCA
  • regularly attend evening and weekend events

Education, Required Competencies, and Preferred Work Experience

The Executive Director must possess a four (4) year degree from an accredited college or university.

The ideal candidate will be a creative, energetic leader who is passionate about advancing the arts in our community, has the ability to motivate and inspire staff and volunteers, and possesses the interpersonal skills needed to engage productively with a range of stakeholders. They must be organized, accountable, and skilled in written and verbal communication. As the hub of all the council’s activities and the public face of the organization, they must be capable of leading in an environment that requires collaboration and consensus building, and they must have the ability to facilitate a workplace where differences of opinion are respected and where diversity, in all forms, is valued. They must have the ability to make sound financial plans and decisions in a non profit environment, with a particular focus on growing the GVCA endowment, maximizing corporate, foundation, and individual support, expanding membership, and increasing the public visibility of and visitorship to our gallery on Murray Hill.

Preference will be given to candidates who have at least three (3) years of prior experience in nonprofit (or for profit) management, especially those who have worked on fundraising strategies, budget development, and in public relations.

Compensation, Work Schedule, and Benefits

The Executive Director position pays $28.50 per hour, with an expectation of 35 hours (no more than 40 hours) of work per week. Since gallery coverage and community engagement are a priority, the Executive Director is expected to work mostly on site, which periodically includes evenings, but there are also opportunities for limited hours of remote work. GVCA will provide mileage reimbursement for travel from the Mt. Morris site to the Rochester Office, as well as for other approved off-site travel.

After a 6 month probationary period, the Executive Director is eligible for health care reimbursement of up to $2,400 per year (no yearly rollover).
