Position Summary:

The Director of Externships, also adjunct faculty member, is charged with overseeing the teaching and administration of the law school’s robust externship program throughout the year - fall, spring and summer terms. Campbell Law’s Externship program is large and well developed, with over 250 sites, serving over 85% of the student population. The director provides oversite of field placements for academic credit, ensuring the compliance of ABA accrediting standards and regularly teaches the classroom components and other related workshops. The director, as a member of the career center staff, works closely with other staff to perform the critical functions of the career center, including counseling of diverse students and alumni, special programming, outreach to potential employers and administration, in a fast paced, service oriented, student focused office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Externship Program Oversight :

  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive and robust externship program for approximately 250 host placement sites, serving our student population in fall, spring and summer semesters.
  • Develop and nurture effective relationships with students, alumni, managing partners of law firms, in-house counsel, judges, corporations, government agencies and other potential employers to effectively recruit qualified supervising attorneys and employers to participate in Campbell Law’s Externship program.
  • Create and design professionalism curriculum for experiential learning through the externship program with a strong understanding of legal pedagogy.
  • Communicate with, conduct site visits and effectively educate and train externship supervising attorneys on a yearly basis.
  • Review and provide comments on students’ work, primarily journals and guided reflections of their experiences.
  • Work with the Academic Dean and Registrar on year-long externship course management.
  • Serve as direct contact for NC State Bar for non-registrar related questions regarding Certified Legal Intern questions.
  • Provide yearly externship reports to the Assistant Dean of Career and Professional Development.
  • Develop and maintain all externship related communications and forms.
  • Provides direction and collaborates with the externship coordinator to complete administrative tasks related to the development and facilitation of online externship placement postings

Career Coaching :

  • Work in partnership with the Director of the Career Center in conducting individual and group coaching sessions and hold office hours for internship/externship questions.
  • Assist students and alumni in making interim and long-term career decisions; shows a strong commitment by providing feedback and supporting students in developing the insight, skills, and experience needed to secure a fulfilling career in the legal profession.

Other duties as assigned :

  • Participate in the law school community by serving on select faculty committee meetings
  • Represent Campbell Law School, the Career Center, and the Externship Program at off campus events, local, national legal conferences and bar associations.
  • Assist the director of the career center in diversity initiatives, coaching, and visioning for comprehensive delivery of career and professional development to all students.

Education/Experience:

  • J.D. Required
  • A minimum of 6-10 years of experience as a practicing lawyer with hiring authority, a professional legal recruiter, or a career counselor would be desirable. Experience in a management position within an academic or legal practice environment would be also desirable. A familiarity with Symplicity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of legal markets, legal processes, hiring trends, court systems, government agencies, inner workings of traditional law offices and in-house legal departments, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various constituencies including, students, faculty, law school and university administration, lawyers, judges, corporate/business professionals and high-level government officials.
  • Superior interpersonal, writing and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent oral presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Sound judgment.
  • Diplomacy.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Must possess exceptional computer skills including the utilization of various web-based databases, virtual meeting software and social media tools, as well as the general operation of the following software programs: Microsoft Access, Adobe Professional, Blackboard, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Travel is a necessity of this position including overnight travel.
  • Ability to work extended hours including weekends and holidays.
