WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
The Nature Conservancy in New York seeks an energetic conservationist for the position of Family Forest Outreach Specialist to work on the Family Forest Carbon Program (FFCP). The position will be working with family forest landowners in Eastern to Central New York, with a generally service area from Albany to Syracuse to Binghamton. The Nature Conservancy has an office in Albany, NY, but office location is somewhat flexible (remote work/home office) within the general service area. The position will require frequent travel in this region. This position will conduct site visits to communicate the FFCP to private landowners, complete forest inventories to determine program eligibility, write management plans and complete other tasks associated with existing forest conservation programs. Additionally, the position will assistant in the development and implementation of a new FFCP reforestation/afforestation practice.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU
- The Family Forest Outreach Specialist will provide technical assistance and support to family forest landowners interested in the Family Forest Carbon Program in the Eastern to Central New York region.
- Communicates program details to family forest landowners, completes forest inventories to determine program eligibility and develops management plans for enrolled landowners.
- You will travel frequently to landowners’ property locations.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., media, government officials, internal scientists.
- Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
- Must have valid driver's license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of forest management, conservation practices and conservation science.
- Ability to explain forest management practices to non-technical audiences.
- Experience conducting forest inventories, including identification of tree species.
- Experience or knowledge of forest management plan development.
- Knowledge of forest carbon programs.
- Knowledge of forest health issues and invasive species control.
- Some experience with GPS and GIS systems.
- Experience performing physical work outdoors in all conditions.
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
