As a summer Urban Vegetable Farmer with Feed Iowa First, you will be fully immersed in all aspects of operations as part of our farm crew growing fresh and free produce for communities in Cedar Rapids. This includes but is not limited to watering, weeding, harvesting, engaging with volunteers, intake of produce and assisting with distribution.

As a vegetable farmer at FIF, your service will take place in a variety of different weather conditions, and you will develop organizational skills and self-sufficiency. We encourage applications from those who are adaptable in a dynamic work environment and excited to learn new skills. Ability to lift and carry 50+ lbs, and a valid U.S. driver’s license, are required for conducting daily activities. FIF is the main producer and provider of fresh produce to food pantries in Linn County.

As a VISTA member with Feed Iowa First, your service will support 3 core programs: Grow Don’t Mow, Distribution, and Grow Some Rows. With Grow Don’t Mow, you will assist over 20 urban farm sites growing free and nutritious produce in support of our food security throughout Linn County, ensuring farms are bountiful and morale is high among community members, volunteers, and staff. Through distribution efforts, you will foster collaboration among food pantries, apartment complexes and resource centers to distribute our produce directly to the community. you would be assisting with weekly pantry drops, apartment deliveries and help load/unload the Veggie Bus. Grow Some Rows is a collection of partnerships with rural farmers, with whom FIF is able to grow large quantities of nutrient-dense produce that our urban plots lack space for in town.

VISTA members are crucial to our success. We’re eager to have you join us this summer! As a Nourish Iowa VISTA member, you will serve among a cohort of members building a more equitable food system throughout Iowa, and will have frequent opportunities to share knowledge within this community through cohort-wide meetings & site visits. You will engage regularly with leaders in food systems via local, statewide, and national coalitions and associations, in addition to being invited to professional development opportunities coordinated by a VISTA Leader in your cohort. Nourish Iowa members are also eligible for free enrollment in Iowa State University's Local Food Leader certification course.

Nourish Iowa Summer VISTA members serve 10 week terms, beginning June 5th, 2023, serving alongside year-long counterparts, a few positions of which are currently posted, but are more involved in direct service rather than capacity building. Depending on the organization you serve with, this may involve any combination of planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, sorting, washing, packing, and distributing produce; as well as direct outreach and education in the communities served.

Compensation:

1) $3,385 living allowance paid in bi-weekly installments during your term

2) End of Service Award - your choice of:
2A) Segal Education Award: $1,460 to use on tuition and other academic expenses, cost of living while in school, or repayment of student loans
2B) Cash Stipend: $345.80
