The purpose of this position is to provide fire protection, rescue, and emergency medical services and operate fire apparatuses and equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Participates in training on fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous material, emergency medical skills, and emergency scene operations.
• Evaluates and performs emergency scene operations by extinguishing fires, providing medical care, driving ambulance or fire apparatus, extricating victims, and effectively operating equipment and fire pump.
• Manages records of events by entering information from incidents into reporting programs and entering records of equipment checks and repair.
• Maintains equipment and station by conducting inspections and tests of equipment and cleaning station and grounds.
• Provides community service by participating in school and fire safety programs, providing equipment demonstrations and apparatus tours, and educating and assisting the public.

Supplemental Functions:

• Performs other similar duties as required.

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

Knowledge:

• Fire safety and education;
• Applicable equipment and materials utilized in fire operations;
• Geography of city;
• First aid practices and techniques;
• Thorough knowledge of modern training principles and practices for adults;
• Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations;
• Firefighting standards.

Licensing and Certifications:

• North Carolina Firefighter Certification;
• North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician Certification;
• Hazardous Material Operations or Technician Level Certification;
• Valid North Carolina Class A or B Driver’s License;
• NC Driver/Operator Certification – Pumps;
• NC Driver/Operator Certification – Aerial;
• Driver Operator Academy;
• Sub Driver Task Book.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

• Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.

• Very Heavy: Exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50 - 100 pounds frequently, or from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly.

• Incumbents are subject to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.
