Description
- Conducts inspections and testing for fire protection on commercial and residential structures for life and fire safety compliance.
- Present and explain fire code requirements and fire prevention information to architects; engineers, and developers; business owners.
- Identify corrective actions necessary to bring properties into compliance with applicable fire codes, laws, regulations, and standards and explain these measures to property owners or their representatives; and work with owner and builders to obtain satisfactory conclusions regarding fire code violations.
- Assists the Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal with resolving complaints from the public relating to fire hazards.
- Enforces City / State adopted fire codes and applicable traffic laws pertaining to fire code violations.
- Assists Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal with all correspondence from Fire Marshal’s office such as reports, inspections, notices, letters, plans and files accordingly.
- Assists Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal in reviewing all plans for commercial structures, developments for code compliance, and performs inspections during construction.
- Inspect properties that store, handle, and use hazardous materials to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and regulations for compliance.
- Conduct public fire safety education lectures and demonstrations to schools, businesses, and civic organizations.
- Assists and/or preforms safety training such as CPR/AED, first aid, and fire extinguisher training to City employees, as well as maintaining records of such training.
- Assist Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal with fire cause and determination of fire related incidents and maintain all records of such incidents.
- Assists with emergency management as needed or directed.
- Performs routine patrol duties during special events / holidays when assigned.
- Serves as essential emergency personnel when required.
- May assist Fire Department with firefighting and emergency medical responses.
- Regular and prompt attendance is an essential function of the position.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
- Required to respond off-duty to assist with emergency response to all-hazards and fire investigations when requested or dispatched.

Education & Training
High school graduation, or it's equivalent; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of: fire inspection practices, ICC (International Code Council) fire and building codes, NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Standards and types of building construction.
Skill/Ability to: read detailed plans and blueprints (both printed and digital versions), demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication, establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, state and local government agencies, contractors, and the general public.
Safety/Physical Requirements: Moderate. Tasks involve performing Fire Safety Inspections of commercial and residential buildings, including climbing on roofs, in attics and on building exteriors as required, bending, stooping, and reaching as needed and the ability to lift/carry fifty pounds of material.
Certifications & Licenses Required
- Valid Texas Driver’s License, minimum of Class B.
Must hold Fire Inspector Certification through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP).
Must hold Plans Examiner Certification through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) or obtain certification within six months after hire date.
Must hold Fire Investigator Certification through TCFP.
Must hold CPR Instructor Certification or obtain certification within six months after hire date.
Preferred Structural Firefighter Certification through TCFP.
Preferred EMT-Basic or higher Certification through DSHS or National Registry.
Full-Time Position
Salary Range $51,084.80 - $63,856.00 DOE
