Duties
- Respond as a member of a firefighting crew to all types of fires or other emergencies.
- Operate hose lines, ladders, and hydrants to control and extinguish fires.
- Respond to emergencies and administer immediate medical treatment using established procedures and appropriate medical devices.
- Performs as a member of a team controlling spills that may be hazardous and of unknown substance.
- Perform general maintenance tasks on firefighting apparatus and equipment to ensure it is readily available for use.
Requirements
Conditions of Employment
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position requires participation in the DoD Firefighter Physical Fitness Program.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state and government driver's license. This position requires the employee to operate a motor vehicle.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- This position requires the employee to work 72 hours a week, which includes weekends and holidays and may be subject to recall after normal tour of duty in cases of emergencies.
- Certificate Requirements must be obtained within twelve (12) months of appointment: Airport Firefighter, Driver/Operator ARFF and Hazardous Materials Technician.
- Certificate Requirements must be obtained within 60 days of appointment: Telecommunicator I
- Certificate Requirements must be obtained within 120 days of appointment: Telecommunicator II

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work that involves the use of firefighting and fire prevention techniques and methods such as performing search and rescue, operating hose lines and performing ventilation; use of firefighting equipment to include driving and operating a full range of emergency services apparatus such as pumpers and aerial trucks; performing hazard assessment and/or conducting fire prevention inspections; use of HAZMAT control procedures to contain spills and leaks; performing basic life support functions and medical protocols such as conducting patient assessment, stabilizing a patient, performing CPR, using an AED, airway management and treating for shock. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Maximum Entry Age: (a) For initial appointments, you cannot have reached your 37th birthday by the day of appointment. (b) If you have passed the designated entry age limit noted but have previously served in a covered position you may be eligible to re-enter the fire service provided that you: 1) meet all applicable qualifications for the position; and 2) will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered and creditable federal firefighter service by the time the federal firefighter reaches the age of 57. Prior service in covered positions and credit towards retirement may be subtracted from your age to determine if the federal firefighter meets the maximum entry age.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
